FIREPROOF YOUR WOODLAND HOME

Published Wednesday, September 23, 1998 in the Nevada County Picayune

Many of our homes in Nevada County are nestled among trees or woodlands. The trees make the home attractive and energy efficient. However, if the forest burns, the house may also.

In order to reduce the damage of fire to the house, try some of these suggestions:

Thin trees out for 100 feet around the house.

  1. Remove all branches overhanging the roof.
  2. Keep dead limbs and pine needles off the lawn.
  3. Stack firewood away from the house.
  4. Use a noncombustible roofing material.
  5. Clean chimneys.
  6. Keep gutters clear of debris.
  7. Use a watered lawn or a driveway to create a fire barrier 15 feet around the house.
