Boot Camp Won't Be Funded by QCPublished Wednesday, September 23, 1998 in the Nevada County PicayuneBY AUTUMN LEAMONS No funding will be given to the Texarkana Boot Camp at least not at this time. The boot camp had recently sent a letter to Quorum Court members requesting donations for new fatigues and boots. This was old business that was tabled indefinitely at the monthly meeting held Monday, September 14. The JP's looked over some records that showed that only two people from Nevada County had been sent to the facility in the past year. Therefore, it would be unnecessary to spend extra money on the institution, they concluded. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Arrington went before theJP's, requesting the county maintain a road leading to Rogers Cemetery, where some family members are buried. The Arringtons said that members of their family come from all over the country to visit the graves of their loved ones. They said the visitors are unable to get there, because of a small creek that passes over the private road and a lack of gravel on the road. The only other route into the cemetery is a Potlatch road, which cannot be maintained by the county anyway. Adron Hicks, JP in the Arrington's area, said that he is willing to travel to the cemetery on the private route to see how much work is needed. Hicks has only been on the Potlatch route. County Judge James Roy Brown said that he believed that the matter should be left open for the time being and that he would be glad to go through the private road to see if it is a shorter route and see if it would be feasible for the county to keep it up. Brown seemed very optimistic about the matter and encouraged the Arrington's to keep trying. The At Risk group, a new drug testing facility that is supposed to move into the former Nevada County Hospital, has asked the county if it could possibly fund the maintenance on the building's air conditioning system. The JP's said they did not feel that they would be able to give out any funds for the project. After further research it has been discovered that the At Risk Program has just settled on some funding and will probably not need the county's assistance after all. The group should be putting up a 'Coming Soon' sign within a couple of weeks, it was reported. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
