Emmet Sets Goals

The Emmet School District held a public meeting on September 14 in the Ross Gymnasium to inform patrons of the school's goals, policies, programs and improvements.

Emmet School goals for the 1998-99 school year are:

  • Improve the average reading score on the SAT-8 for students in grades K-4 to 50%.
  • Increase attendance rate for students in K-12 to the state average of 94.1%.
  • Improve the completion rate for high school seniors to the state average of 83%.
  • Increase the effective use of technology.
The following programs have been implemented to meet these goals:
  1. Reading recovery program;
  2. ABC pre-kindergarten program;
  3. K-4 summer program;
  4. SHOTS, a summer enrichment program for K-6;
  5. Electronic bookshelf in the junior high school;
  6. Student academic incentive program;
  7. Eye catcher program in the elementary school;
  8. Incentive program for students scoring above the 50% on the SAT-9;
  9. A greater variety of extra-curricular activities;
  10. After-school tutoring program;
  11. Career awareness day;
  12. Teacher in-service in technology
  13. CCCnet computer program in K-8; and
  14. All classrooms accessible to the Internet.
School improvements include the following installation of covered walkways and concrete walks between most buildings on campus;

security system for all high school classrooms; purchase of a new school bus; Technology Challenge Grant award of $55,000 to purchase laptop computers in grades K-8 (the grant also provided for extensive teacher in-service and provides for all rooms to be connected to the CCCnet); and completion of a new air conditioned gymnasium.

Emmet School continues to provide an after school day care program for benefit of working parents. The day care program stays open till 6 p.m. daily for a nominal fee.

Emmet School's enrollment has increased 45% since 1990. It is in compliance with all state standards, according to Dr. Gene Ross, superintendent of the district.
