Classy MomentsPublished Wednesday, September 30, 1998 in the Gurdon TimesIt just seems as though excitement is in the air around Cabe Middle School. The ground work is being done for the two new classrooms and physical education building. We really do need those classrooms. Mrs. Hitt will have her choir room, so she will not have to conduct classes on the stage in the cafeteria. Thank goodness Mrs. Downey will have a room for her reading and gifted and telented classes and she will not have to roll the cart with 'have class will travel' on it as she seeks out classrooms while a teacher is observing conference time. We are steadily working to make things the best they can be in the best building there is. We are not complaining, please understand that. We are constantly looking for ways to make safety of the students a major concern and to find solutions to those concerns. The CMS Student Council will conduct the first Cabe Middle School assembly Wednesday, (today) September 30, at 10:00 a.m. in the Gurdon High School gym. You are most welcome to attend and enjoy the international students from Ouachita Baptist University. We are expecting two, but we do not know from which countries. We will learn their culture, customs, language and will ask questions that some of our students have for them. Mrs. Clark deserves a big thank you for having her seventh graders write business letters to each Arkansas county requesting information of counties to update the Arkansas file in our media center. That may sound simple, but just imagine having 75 letters to grade for spelling, punctuation, staying within margins and then the envelopes correctly addressed. Students had to look up the Zip Code for their assigned county. Now, we wait for replies. Thursday, when our junior high football team has a game, we have a loud pep rally. I have said it before, but it is necessary again, the junior high cheerleaders are super! They have not only lead us in cheers to get the team spirit going, but also involving several students for various entertainment. The band contributes greatly to the pep rallies. Under the direction of Mr. Wimberly, the band students really bring out their 'spirit' with their music. Band playing, hand clapping, students cheering my goodness, who could ask for anything more? Well, maybe a little time. Mrs. Carla Jester is doing a fantastic job taking care of the media center. She is ready to assist a teacher and a class in any way she can. We are certainly glad to have her on our staff. Welcome aboard, Mrs. Jester. Plans are being made for the dedication of our building. The ceremony will be held October 14 at 11:00 a.m. in the Gurdon High School gym. The public is invited. This will be a very special occasion and we are looking forward to it. Please remember the 'save the picture fund' account at First State Bank in town. Donations will be used to preserve the pictures of previous GHS graduates from 1929 until the first class to graduate from the present high school. There are 65 pictures, maybe I should say frames, with individual pictures of each year of graduation. These pictures are history that needs to be treasured and your help is greatly needed to have this project completed. Remember that you are always welcome to come for a visit and a tour of our school. We enjoy company as we continue to make Classy Moments at CMS.
