School Program Next WeekPublished Wednesday, October 7, 1998 in the Gurdon TimesApproximately 200 high school students from Arkansas and surrounding states are expected to attend a student recruitment emphasis program titled SCOPE at Ouachita Baptist University, October 15-16. The event is coordinated by the OBU admissions counseling office and is one of several similar programs it sponsors through the course of the academic year. At SCOPE, the visiting students will get a first hand look at seeing what college life is all about by spending the night in the residence halls with some of OBU's current students, hearing programs concerning campus extracurricular activities, being exposed to the university's academic life and having programs presented on areas such as religious life, student financial aid, housing and meals. "Another advantage of SCOPE is that the high school students will have the opportunity to visit with our faculty and staff," said Kathy Berry, director of admissions counseling. Registration for the program begins at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 15, in the lobby of Evans Student Center, followed by dinner at 5:30 p.m. in the banquet room of Evans. The visiting high school students will then be the guests of Ouachita for a Tiger Tunes performance at 7:30 p.m. in Jones Performing Arts Center. A praise and worship service will be optional for the SCOPE attendants at 10:00 p.m. in Berry Chapel. On Friday morning, October 16, the SCOPE students will have breakfast in Birkett Williams Hall at 9:00. They will meet with academic representatives from 9:30-10:00 a.m., after which they are free to observe classes of their choosing. From 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., the students will hear a panel of students, faculty and administrative staff members discuss campus life. From 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, the students will meet with admissions counselors in a wrap-up session. At noon, the SCOPE students will attend Noonday in Berry Chapel, a student- lead devotional period sponsored by the Baptist Student Union. The weekend will close after the luncheon in the Evans Student Center from 12:30-1:30 p.m. For more information on the SCOPE weekend, persons may contact Kathy Berry, at OBU (870)245-5110.
