Classy Moments

Published Wednesday, October 7, 1998 in the Gurdon Times

The days of September have come and gone and now October is here. Is it just me, or does it seem as though time is flying by? Maybe the old saying, "Time flies by when you are having fun" is true after all. Please understand that with all of the teaching and learning that goes on at Cabe Middle School, we do have time to enjoy having fun also.

If you have never attended one of our pep rallies, you have missed a great opportunity to see and experience fun in action. The students really get involved in cheering and clapping to show support for their team.

The cheerleaders had a contest last week at the pep rally to see which grade could make the best banner in support of the Gurdon Junior High Go-Devils. The judges, of whom this writer does not know who they were, had a tough decision to make, as the students had worked really hard to make their banner the best. Results: first place was eighth grade! Yes, finally the eighth graders received the Spirit Stick. Way to go, eighth graders! The fifth grade received second place. Those fifth graders have received the Spirit Stick two times already this year. They know how to be heard! Keep it going, fifth graders!

The CMS Student Council conducted the first Cabe Middle School assembly. Several teachers shared various activities that are going on in their classes. It is always so nice to hear a teacher express the special projects or area of study that the students are really involved in and enjoy completing. Mrs. Blanton, sixth grade teacher, and Mrs. Butler and Mrs. Green, fifth grade teachers, shared some of the 'unique' learning activities they are involved in at present. Mrs. Green also explained about the grant that she received that provided her students with Geo safaris and talking globes.

Mrs. Davies, fifth grade teacher, introduced the fifth grade 'citizen' student for September, Kenneth Harper. Jamie Smith and Tracy Coplen introduced the sixth grade 'citizen, 'Kiffany Hill. Mrs. Clark, seventh and eighth grade teacher, was pleased to have Dominic McPeak for seventh grade 'citizen' student. Mrs. Bullard, another seventh and eighth grade teacher, gave the eighth grade 'citizen,' Maegan James, a big hug after she introduced Maegan.

An international student from Ouachita Baptist University was the guest for the program. She is from Azerbaijan. She informed the audience about the history of her home country, the cultures, religion, difference in the schools there as compared to here, and so much more interesting information that it has been stated, "We want her to come back." Lacey Jester, president of the Student Council, asked the guest questions, which had been prepared by the students and she handled them with great ease and humor. We hope to have another similar program later this year.

We think that our cricket problem has been solved. We are not seeing as many of those little creatures, and most definitely, not 'smelling' them as we had been for several days.

Plans are in the making for the dedication of our building October 14 at 11:00 a.m. in the Gurdon High School gym. Everyone is invited. Do try to arrange your schedule so you can attend this very special event. All patrons, especially those with kids in school, should be interested enough in the new facility to attend.

Parents, be sure to mark on your calender that October 22 will be parent-teacher conferences.

We appreciate the interest and support you have for us, and together we will continue to make those Classy Moments at CMS.
