Nashville Spotted The Curley Wolves Two PointsPublished Wednesday, October 7, 1998 in the Nevada County PicayuneNashville spotted the Curley Wolves two points with a safety, then put its defense to work and solidly stopped the Prescott offense for a 35-10 win Friday night. The only score the Wolves could get was an interception by the defense for a touchdown in the third period. The loss for Prescott now has them 1-1 in the 7AAA Conference. The game was completely dominated by the Nashville offense. They ended the game with 59 plays. The Scrappers had 37 rushing plays that netted 224. Prescott had 34 that netted only 41 yards. Nashville quarterback Blake Young attempted 22 passes, completing eight for 188 yards. Prescott's secondary couldn't contain the receivers. Willie Scott caught two of the passes for TD's and Brandon Rowland caught another for a TD. The Prescott offense did score once, but the pass from Josh Bullock to Andrew Fellows was nullified because of a penalty. The Curley Wolves were stopped at the Nashville two early in the first quarter, but that was as close as they could get officially. Jarrod Yates had the pleasure of kicking off to begin the game. The Prescott rush had the Scrappers backed up at their 11. Finally, with good defensive playing and a Nashville penalty, Calvin Flemons sacked Young back in his own end zone for the safety, giving Prescott a 2-0 lead. Prescott was to get the ball back with a free kick from Nashville, either by punting or a place kick-off. The Scrappers punted with Edward Glenn getting the ball somewhere around the 35 and returning it to the Nashville nine-yard line. Terry Woodley managed seven yards on the first offensive carry to the two-yard line, but Calvin Flemons lost two on the next play. Woodley struggled to get the two yards back on third down, and on fourth down he was stopped cold for a turnover. The Wolves just couldn't do it no matter how hard they tried. But the Prescott defense was stern too. Nashville, after taking over on the two, couldn't get past the three and had to punt, which gave the Curley Wolves the opportunity to score. They started the drive only 27 yards away from the goal line with Rafael Marlow getting the first call and one yard. Then Bullock lined up in shotgun formation and connected with Fellows for the touchdown with 7:59 left in the first period. But officials ruled that Prescott had committed a penalty, an illegal shift, and called the TD back. That was all for the offense the rest of the night. They later got a first down in the second period, one in the third and three in the fourth, but never got inside the Nashville 30 again. Prescott did score again in the third period and by the defense. With the ball on their own 39-yard line and facing a fourth and six, Yates punted the ball, which was downed at the Nashville 36. On the first place Young attempted a pass that was intercepted by Brian Woodley, who didn't stop until he was in the end zone. Coach David Bennett decided his players should go for two points and Bullock's pass was for Fellows in the end zone, but Fellows was interfered with by the defense, according to the officials. The ball was moved closer and this time Matt Phillips got the two points to make it 22- 10 in favor of Nashville. Nashville first scored on its drive following Prescott TD that was nullified by the penalty. It took 11 plays from their 20-yard line. The drive was climaxed with a 25-yard TD throw from Young to Scott, the wide receiver who left behind all of Prescott's secondary. With 50 seconds left in the half, Scott again got clear of the Prescott defense and Young connected with him for the second time and the Scrappers' second score. Nashville struck three times in the third period. The first came on their first possession of the new half. Prescott had stalled after taking the kick-off and had to punt on fourth and 13 with Nashville beginning on its 39-yard line. This time, from 22 yards out, Young hit Rowland with a pass and the score was quickly 21-2. Only a short while later did Prescott's defense come through with the interception for a TD, and following that, it was only a short time later that Nashville came through with its fourth touchdown. After taking Prescott's kick-off the Scrappers began at their 32, gaining eight, then 12, then eight again. On the next play is when Robert Witherspoon broke away for a 40-yard TD run. The score was quickly 28-10 with 5:11 left in the period. After making a first down, the Wolves had to punt on fourth and two from their 32. Nashville began its next successful drive from their own 43. Travell Green got the honors for the score after Witherspoon gave him the opportunity. Witherspon gained 42 on the first play, then Green picked up three and 10 before going over from the two-yard line. Witherspoon gained 141 yards for the night and Green picked up another 60. In all, the Scrappers rushed for 224 yards. Young added another 188 yards in passes. He attempted 22, connecting with eight. He was intercepted once. The scrappers combined for a total of 412 yards to Prescott's 48. Prescott was penalized four times for 50 yards. Nashville was penalized nine times for 105 yards. This week won't be any better for the battered Curley Wolves. They will host the De Queen Leopards, coming in undefeated. They are 2-0 in conference play and 5-0 overall. Last week, the Leopards whipped Mena 34-7. On tap this Friday night also it the annual FBLA fish fry in the elementary school cafeteria. Plenty of fish for everyone. Fordyce took care of Bismarck easy enough last week, 62-8. The Redbugs are 2-0 in the conference and 4-1 overall. This week Fordyce clashes with Nashville. Should be a good game. Fountain Lake, Prescott's opponent next week, keeps on winning. They handled Fouke, 21-8, and are now 1-1 in the conference and 3-1-1 overall. Gurdon got revenge over Dierks, 42-8. Last year Gurdon had to forfeit to the Outlaws because the officials did not show at Gurdon. The Go-Devils are now 2-0 in their conference and 4-1 overall. Their only loss was at Prescott. Mineral Springs was defeated by Murfreesboro 22-7. And Hope just keeps on winning. The Bobcats took care of Hot Springs, 32-7, to remain undefeated. They are 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the AAAA-Southwest Conference. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
