Harrison Man Arrested; Charged With FleeingBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, October 7, 1998 in the Nevada County Picayune Members of the Nevada County Sheriff's Office had an interesting afternoon Tuesday, Sept. 28. A bail bondsman from Longview, Texas, came to the NCSO with a bond for an Arkansas criminal. The criminal, Stoney Cox, 33, of Harrison, had reportedly committed the crimes of third degree battery, residential burglary and felon in possession of a firearm in the Harrison area. He was picked up initially in Texas and bonded out. Cox was to appear in Carroll County court, but reportedly stole a truck in Texas, jumped bond and came to Nevada County. Cox was first found at a deer camp in the Upchurch Community, but fled on foot when officers tried to apprehend him. This resulted in a two-hour manhunt, which ended when Cox walked up to the home of Walt DeYoung. DeYoung's wife, Mary, was home at the time, saw Cox walking up carrying a rifle and called the police. NCSO auxiliary deputy Shelby Haynie was in the area in his personal vehicle and answered the call. When he got to the DeYoung's house, Cox asked him for a ride into town. The rifle, a .30-.30 was leaning against the house as Cox had gotten a drink from a fountain, according to Wayne Kisselburg, criminal investigator for the Prescott Police Department and NCSO. Haynie arrested Cox with no incident. Locally, he was charged with fleeing, misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and as a felon in possession of a firearm. He is being held in the Nevada County jail with no bond Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
