Nevada Buying Bus; Approves Transfers; Nixes Using ChartersBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, October 7, 1998 in the Nevada County Picayune In a special meeting, the Nevada School Board voted to purchase a new school bus. Rick McAffee, Nevada Superintendent, said the district tries to buy a new bus each year. Two companies were contacted about prices, with Ward being the lowest for a 77 passenger diesel powered bus at $53,750. Bluebird's bid was for $58,000. Ward, McAffee said, is an Arkansas company and can bid lower because it saves in shipping costs. The board agreed to go with the Ward bus. McAffee said the district has the money to purchase the bus and doesn't need to go through the revolving loan program as it has in the past. During the regular meeting earlier in September, board member Don Callicott inquired as to the cost of chartering buses for school-related activities. McAffee checked with two different companies and found it wouldn't be economically feasible to do this. The Ouachita Coach Co. was the least expensive of the two, but it would run the district $35,100 annually to charter through them. He said with the district buying a bus and using it for eight years, it costs the district $10,975 per year for these functions. In other business, the board agreed to the transfer of two students from Nevada to Emmet, and accepted a transfer from Prescott to Nevada.
