DeQueen Keeps Their Record Clean

Published Wednesday, October 14, 1998 in the Nevada County Picayune

De Queen kept its record clean Friday night, soundly defeating the Curley Wolves 32-6. Prescott is now 1-2 in the 7AAA Conference.

Although the Leopards are now 6-0, they remain behind Nashville (5-1) and Fordyce (4-2) in the state rankings in Class AAA. The Nashville Scrappers remain the number one team in Class AAA. Fordyce is fourth, behind McGehee and Hamburg, and De Queen is fifth.

Prescott allowed De Queen more than half the offensive yards Friday night as the Curley Wolves did the previous week at Nashville.

De Queen rushed for 146 yards and quarterback Eric Pearce completed six of 10 passes for 105 more. His passing yardage was the total for all of Prescott's offense: 105 yards 23 by rushing and 82 from passes by Josh Bullock and Jarrod Yates, who quarterbacked much of the last half.

Yates attempted 11 passes, completing five for 58 yards. He had two intercepted and four fell incomplete. Bullock attempted seven passes, completing four for 28 yards and falling short on three.

Yates also scored the only touchdown for Prescott, from two yards out in the third period.

Two of Pearce's passes went for touchdowns for the leopards: from 29 yards out and 38 yards out.

Each team made mistakes that were very costly to each, and were penalized for them. The worst came from De Queen. The Leopards were penalized seven times for 85 yards. Two personal foul penalties came back to back on the same play and head coach Jeff Jones was thrown out of the game over the infraction. The Curley Wolves were penalized eight times for 55 yards.

The first touchdown for De Queen came on a blocked punt in the first quarter.

The Leopards scored twice in the second quarter, one on a 29-yard TD pass to Derek VanVoast and the second on a 19-yard run by Justin Powell.

In the third quarter it was the 38-yard pass to Bryan Prinsen for a TD.

The final touchdown for the Leopards came in the fourth period when Prinsen broke away from the pack for a 46-yard run to the goal line. This came on the first play after Coach Jones was thrown out.

A pass intended for Edward Glenn was intercepted by Powell near the 40-yard line. He wasn't stopped until he got to the 15. A flag was thrown against the Leopards and Jones left the designated box for players and coaches, getting in one official's face. Another flag was thrown and Jones was out.

Pity Prescott at this time with the entire De Queen offense wanting revenge. They got it, 46 yards at one time to make the final score 32-6.

Prescott's touchdown came after the defense, who has been doing an outstanding job all year (even though the last two weeks it has given up over 700 yards), got the ball back after recovering a De Queen fumble.

Pearce went back to pass and the ball was knocked loose, with Prescott taking over on the De Queen 37-yard line.

On the first play, Yates' pass fell incomplete, but a roughing the passer penalty gave the Curley Wolves a first down at the De Queen 21-yard line.

Yates called his play from the shotgun formation, but the distance didn't matter. He was sacked for a loss of six yards.

On the next play, his pass was intended for Glenn, but a De Queen defender tipped the ball away from Glenn and the pass was caught by Calvin Flemons at the two, where Yates 'sneaked' from on the next play for the score. A two-point conversion try, a pass intended for Glenn, failed to leave the score at 26-6 at this time.

Prescott ended the game with 10 first downs. De Queen finished with 12.

This week the Curley Wolves will travel to Fountain Lake for another conference game.

The Cobras are also 1-2 in the conference race, so this is a crucial game for the Wolves. Overall, the Cobras have won three, lost two and tied one.

Next week the Wolves will make the long trip to Mena. The Bearcats are now in the 7AAA Conference. They are also 1-2 in the conference and 2-4 overall.

The last two regularly-scheduled games will be at home. On October 30, the Wolves will host Fouke for their homecoming date. Fouke's record is the same as Mena's, 1-2 and 2-4.

The last game will be Thursday, November 5, when the Wolves will host the Redbugs of Fordyce. The Redbugs are 2-1 in the conference.

Here are some scores of interest to Prescott fans.

Fouke edged Bismarck 9-6. Prescott had romped over the Lions 52-6 on September 25.

Mena defeated Fountain Lake 35-28 last Friday.

Nashville fought the Redbugs to a 49-38 win. The game appears to have been an offensive battle.

Gurdon shut out Stamps 27-0 and Mineral Springs easily took care of Hortio 45-0 in the 7AA-West Conference.

Hope remains undefeated after taking care of Malvern 40-14. Prescott and Nashville, two Class AAA teams, are the only ones who have stayed close to the Bobcats. Hope defeated Prescott 21-14 and Nashville 29-28.

At this point the Curley Wolves need lots of encouragement. The best way to show your support for the team is to be at every game, whether it be away at Fountain Lake or Mena, or at home. Go out to the ball game.
