Health-A-Rama Is September 11Published Wednesday, September 1, 1999 in the Nevada County PicayuneBY JOHN MILLER Fair time in Nevada County includes the annual Health-A-Rama. This year's health fair will be held Saturday, Sept. 11, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church. Once again, the event is sponsored by the Prescott-Nevada County Health Alliance. "We're excited about it," said Janet McAdams, with the Nevada County Health Unit. "There will be lots of different screenings." These screenings include tests for blood sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol, cataract and glaucoma along with oxygen saturation. A follow up is recommended for those getting the cataract and glaucoma tests done. For the other tests, fasting is recommended, so don't eat before going to the health fair. There will also be education information available on such topics as drug and alcohol prevention, mammograms, in-home services, financial health and physical fitness. For the first time, the Nevada County Sheriff's Office will provide fingerprinting and photo identification for children. As the children grow older, they can be taken to the NCSO for new photos. Each year, McAdams said, this event has grown larger. Last year's health fair was held during a storm, but between 400-500 people still ventured out to get screenings done. There will also be plenty of activities for the younger visitors, she said, as games and prizes will be going on all day. Door prizes will also be awarded at various times during the health fair. Fliers about the event will be sent to area schools for students to take home to their parents. This will be done during the week of the health fair. The medical vans for St. Michael's Hospital and Baptist Medical Center in Arkadelphia will also be on hand for the event. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
