Stamps Gets Licked (cont)BY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, October 14, 1998 in the Gurdon Times k to the field, the offense never got out of the huddle as Gurdon let the clock run out and preserved a 27-0 win. Unofficial statistics show the Devils connecting on four of eight passes for 83 yards and two touchdowns. Stamps didn't attempt a pass. The Devils punted three times for a net of 118 yards, while Stamps booted the ball twice for a total of 76 yards. Neither team had a return. For some reason, Gurdon is penalty prone, even at home. The Devils saw four flags hit the turf against them for 35 yards, while Stamps was flagged three times for 25 yards in loss. The Devils sacked Stamps twice, while the Jackets never got close to the Gurdon quarterback. The Devils failed to commit a turnover in the game, while the Jackets put the ball on the ground seven times, losing three fumbles. Gurdon led in first downs 19-12 for the game. Stamps did outgain Gurdon on the ground, with 172 yards rushing to the Devils's 166. The Jackets had 49 rushing plays, with Gurdon running the ball 32 times. Still, the Devils had more total yards than Stamps at 249-172. Charles had 21 carries for Gurdon for 96 yards as the leading ground gainer. Hatley ran five times for 28 yards, while Allen carried three times for 19. Meeks had two carries for 14 yards, with Griffin gaining nine yards on his only carry. In other games of interest to Devil fans, Foreman had an easy time against Lewisville with a 24-6 win; Mineral Springs spanked Horatio 45-0 and Murfreesboro escaped Dierks 39-37 in a surprisingly high scoring game. Gurdon and Murfreesboro lead the pack in the 7AA West with identical records of 5-1, 3- 0. Next up is Foreman at 4-2, 2-1, with Horatio posting a 2-1 league record and 3-3 overall mark. Mineral springs is fifth at this time, 2-3, 2-2, with Stamps 2-4 and 1-2. The Outlaws are 1-3-1 overall and 0-3 in league play, while the Lewisville Red Devils are 0-6 and 0-3. This week's games see Horatio visiting Dierks; Foreman traveling to Mineral Springs; Murfreesboro making the trip to Stamps and Gurdon on the road to Lewisville.
