Gurdon Clearcuts Lewisville (cont)BY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, October 21, 1998 in the Gurdon Times Gurdon took over on its own 38, immediately getting flagged for holding. Mercifully, though, the officiating crew didn't stop the clock during the period on first downs or penalties. There were no complaints about this either. Oliver Webster was the workhorse for Gurdon during its final scoring drive of the night. He broke free and raced to the Lewisville 26 for a 46-yard gain on his first carry of the period. However, Gurdon was flagged for illegal motion on the next play, moving the team five yards back. Webster broke free on the next snap, making it to the Lewisville 2 before being brought down. He capped the drive with his first touchdown of the season on the next play. Colby Pace, under center, kept the ball on the two-point conversion to give the Devils a 40-0 lead with 5:56 showing. Lewisville managed to maintain possession for the remainder of the contest, with the help of an unsportsmanlike conduct call against Gurdon, followed by a flag against the Go-Devils for having too many men on the field. Still, the Red Devils were only able to get to the Gurdon 45 before time ran out. Gurdon is assured of a playoff berth, and is now working to keep its league record perfect to have home field advantage during post season action. Lewisville, on the other hand, is getting ready for basketball season. Unofficial game statistics show neither team with an aerial attack. Gurdon was 0-3, while Lewisville went 0-7 through the air. The Go-Devils punted twice for 59 yards and no returns. Lewisville booted the ball six times for a total of 174 yards, but gave up 85 yards in returns, including a touchdown. Gurdon saw flags fall eight times for 75 yards, while the host team was penalized twice for 10 yards. In spite of the conditions, there were relatively few turnovers. Gurdon put the ball on the ground five times (twice on one play during a two-point conversion attempt), losing it once. Lewisville fumbled three times, turning it over twice. Gurdon led in first downs 12-9. The game was won on the ground attack. Gurdon rushed the ball 22 times for 311 yards. Lewisville had more carries, 34, but could only manage 113 yards in the slop. Charles led Gurdon's running attack with five carries for 90 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Hatley followed with six rushes for 72 yards and two scores. Webster was next, carrying the ball three times for 79 yards and a score, while Hopson rushed three times for 23 yards. Adrian Meeks had a carry for two yards, while Chad Cox gained 23 yards on his lone attempt during a reverse. Joe Plyler got into the act with nine yards on one attempt, while Allen lost a yard on his only carry. Justin Smith gained four on one carry as well. For the most part, Gurdon's offense and defense have been awesome this season. Through the first seven games, the Devils have outscored their opponents 186-38, pitching four shutouts. Gurdon's offense is averaging 26.6 points per game, while the defense is allowing 5.4. With these numbers, it's no surprise the Devils are ranked 4th in AA football statewide. In other games of interest Friday night, Horatio hammered Dierks 43-0; Mineral Springs blasted Foreman 41-0; and Murfreesboro ripped Stamps 33-7. Looking at team standings in the 7AA West, Gurdon and Murfreesboro are tied for first with 6-1 overall records and 4-0 league marks; Horatio is next at 4-3, 3-1; followed by Mineral Springs, 3-3, 3-2; Foreman enters with a 4-3, 2-3 record; with Stamps at 2-5, 1-3; Dierks has a 1- 4-1 overall mark, and is 0-4 in league play; while Lewisville brings up the rear at 0-7 and 0-5. This week's games see Mineral Springs making the trip to Dierks; Lewisville heading cross-county to play Stamps; Murfreesboro has a Saturday date with Horatio; and Gurdon will be in the friendly confines of Gus Brown Stadium hosting the Foreman Gators. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
