Progress Visible In Gurdon (cont)BY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, October 21, 1998 in the Gurdon Times do to help," he said, "it needs to." The 18th Annual Forest Festival is right around the corner, scheduled for Oct. 31. The festival, Smith said, is always held the last Saturday in October. A lot of activities have been planned for this year's event, starting with the Rotary Club's Pancake Breakfast at 7 a.m. There are several "games" centered around logging activities as well. This year, visitors to the festival may find it easier to get around in Gurdon. This is because new street signs have been placed at every street corner in town. Other improvements in Gurdon include the city's annual clean up program, where residents are encouraged to call City Hall with items to be carted off. This program is a big help, he said. The Clark County Adult Education holds classes for GED courses in a city-owned building. These classes are held at no cost to the students. A new water well was drilled as part of the rural water project, with a storage tank added. The city's sewer system is capable of pumping 850,000 gallons per day, but is currently only having to deal with a third of this amount. There is plenty of room for expansion, Smith said. CCIC President Brown Hardman called Gurdon and Arkadelphia sister cities needing to work together to get even more done. He said the CCIC annual membership drive is getting started, with more than $10,000 raised last year in individual memberships. Prior to the March 1, 1997 tornadoes, the CCIC had an operating budget of $110,000. Part of these funds came from the CCQC and the Arkadelphia City Council. However, after the storms ravaged downtown Arkadelphia, Hardman said, the CCIC slashed its budget as much as possible so more funds would be available to those in need. Volunteers are being sought to help with the membership drive. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
