LUVS Program Coming To PrescottPublished Wednesday, October 21, 1998 in the Nevada County PicayuneBY AUTUMN LEAMONS Walt Denton, Prescott/Nevada County's Economic director, addressed the Quorum Court Monday, October 12. Denton told the court that he had been checking into the development of LUVS program that is coming to the old Nevada County Hospital building. Denton said that the last time he spoke with the group they were planning to start telemarketing across the 50 states to raise money for the hospital. He said nothing else has been mentioned about the Special Olympics that was to be held in Shreveport to support further funding to the hospital. Some changes have been made in the hospital plan. Instead of using the hospital for a drug testing facility, it will strictly be used as a children's hospital, he said. The reason being that not many people liked the sound of a children's hospital being connected with a drug testing facility. There is still no exact time when the program will get started. The court also asked Denton to expound on the progress of the road leading to the industrial park. Denton said that there were many different steps that had to be taken in order to get the road completed. The next step is to assign an official name and number to the road. After that the name and number would have to be agreed upon and then the judge would have to sign it. On new business the court addressed building a new revenue office outside the courthouse. The revenue office is where drivers' licenses and auto tags are sold. The Court would like to get the old health office and renovate to fit the Revenue office's needs. Judge James Roy Brown wanted to appoint a committee to look at the specifications on the health building to see what they had to work with. The committee consists of Adron Hicks, Curtis Lee Johnson and Gary Lewis. Judge Brown addressed the court on the matter of the county's water. Judge said that there is a program called Water for Arkansas that could help the county tremendously. In order to get the program, the county needs endorsements from organizations as well as individuals. He made it very clear that this was not a new tax. Brown said that money could be borrowed at a very low interest rate for the project. No new taxes would be needed for the project through Water for Arkansas, he said. Brown said that this proposal was on the ballot two years ago, but failed by 52 votes. He said that he would like to get individual endorsements and then let the Quorum Court make an endorsement. The court accepted the endorsement and then a committee was appointed for the budget. The committee consists of: Billy Bob Rhodes, Danny Miller, John Henderson and Arvel Mason. The county's director of Office of Emergency Services is planning to resign. A committee was formed to begin the search for a new director. The committee consists of William Mullins, Gene Fore and Davis Benton. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
