Dr. Charles AveryPublished Wednesday, September 29, 1999 in the Nevada County PicayuneDr. Charles Avery passed away at the John L. McClellan Veterans Hospital on Saturday, September 25, 1999. Dr. Avery was born in Prescott on September 4, 1929. He was a 1954 graduate from the University of Arkansas School of Medicine. After an internship at University Hospital, he spent four years in the U.S. Army, where he had additional training in surgery. He returned to Prescott in 1959 and he spent almost 30 years as a beloved physician before being forced to retire because of failing health. Survivors include his wife, Betty; daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Richard Devine of Sherwood; two sons, David Avery of Prescott and Dr. James Edward Avery of Atlanta, Ga.; granddaughters, Stephanie And Dana Devine; and one sister, Mary Orren of Prescott. Services were held Tuesday, September 28, at the First United Methodist Church with burial in DeAnn Cemetery under the direction of the Shackelford Funeral Home of Prescott.
