Kirby Takes Three Games From Emmet As Basketball Season OpensBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, October 28, 1998 in the Nevada County Picayune Kirby's Trojans proved to be more than the Emmet Eagles could handle as basketball season kicked off Tuesday, Oct. 20. Emmet's senior boys took it on the chin 77-34 in their opening game. Kirby came out hot to get the game started, racing to a 22-10 first quarter lead. By halftime, the Trojans were up 41-17, and cruised to a 61-22 advantage by the end of the third quarter. The Eagles were led by Don Paul Mitchell's 11 points on the night, with Dee Muldrow next with five. Kirby had three players in double figures, as W. Stewart canned 18, C. Brunt netted 14 and M. Cook added 11. Emmet converted seven of 14 free throw attempts, while the Trojans sank 17 of 25 from the line. EMMET 35 KIRBY 45 The senior Lady Eagles, playing their first official game in years, played the Lady Trojans a solid game before falling 45-35. Kirby held a slender 14-12 lead at the end of one, only to see Emmet rally in the second to tie the game at 20-20 at the half. The Lady Trojans began pulling away in the third period, as they pushed the score to 35-27 at the buzzer, holding on for the 10-point win. Amanda Hodges had the hot hand for the Lady Eagles with 18 points on the night. Christal Robinson was next with 8. Valeri Turner paced Kirby with 18 as the only player for the Lady Trojans in double figures. The Lady Eagles were two of three at the charity stripe, while Kirby was six of eight. EMMET 21 KIRBY 54 Emmet's junior boys opened their season on the short end of a 54-21 final score against Kirby. The Eagles got off to a slow start in the first as the junior Trojans posted a 17-3 advantage. By halftime, Emmet trailed 29-10. The situation didn't improve in the third quarter as Kirby pulled further away at 44-14. Kerry Love led Emmet with eight points. M. Williams had a game-high 12 points, while C. Vines added 11. The Eagles shot 33 percent from the line, connecting on three of nine. Kirby spent a good deal of time at the charity strip, but could only capitalize on eight of 28 free throws. EMMET JAMBOREE Emmet hosted a jamboree Monday, Oct. 19, as the Eagles prepared for the start of the regular season. The format had the teams involved playing two quarters of roundball. Emmet's senior girls went down 21-7 against the Spring Hill Lady Bears. Hodges and Dougan led Emmet with three points each. V. Formby was the game's leading scorer with nine. Emmet's second game was against Delight, with the Lady Eagles posting a 22-17 win in the two quarters of play. Hodges again was the leading scorer, ripping the cords for 18 points. The Lady Bulldogs were led by B. Bailey's seven. In junior boys action Saratoga routed Blevins 29-9. Brandon Wyman led Blevins with four, while the junior 'Dogs wee paced by Reggie Lewis's 13. Saratoga's junior girls downed the Lady Hornets 15-14. Laressa McDonald led the Lady 'Dogs with five, while Sonya Thomas and Whitney McDonald had four each. Allison Jordan burned the nylons for 10 to lead all scorers in the game. Emmet's junior boys dropped a 16-14 heartbreaker to Spring Hill. Eric Hopson led Emmet with nine points, while the 'Cubs were paced by Braddock with six. Delight hammered Emmet's junior squad 37-7 in the Eagles's other game. T.J. LaRue led Emmet with three points in the outing. S. Campbell played string music to the tune of 14 points to lead all scorers in the contest. OUACHITA JAMBOREE Emmet's senior teams made the road trip to Ouachita Saturday, Oct. 17, for a jamboree with the Warriors. The Lady Eagles posted a 31-16 win over Carthage in their game. In the two periods of play, Hodges was unstoppable as she poured in 18 points to lead Emmet. Tracy Johnson and Marsha Johnson led Carthage with four each. Emmet's senior boys didn't fare as well against the Blue Devils as they succumbed 45- 27. Don Mitchell led Emmet with seven points. LaParkah Thomas was the game's leading scorer with 16 points.
