Classy Moments

Published Wednesday, October 28, 1998 in the Gurdon Times

As Cousin Minnie Pearl would say, "Howdy, we're just so proud to be here!" We are so happy in our new building. Time just seems to have a way of getting away from us without realizing it. We are just busy!

We have had several students missing a few days of class due to a virus. Hopefully that bug will realize that is not welcome around here and leave us alone.

Parent-teacher conferences were well attended Thursday. We do appreciate the parents for taking time out of their schedules to come by to visit with the teachers and discuss the progress of their child.

'Get of D-Hall' free passes were given to the students as their parents were given their grades. Maybe that is why we had such a great number to attend. If the student has not had to use that free pass during the school year and has the pass available at the end of school, it can be exchanged for a treat! Come on, students, let's see a 'bunch-a-stacks' of those unused passes in May.

Teachers certainly enjoyed a delicious potluck Thursday barbecue from Allen's! Thank you for finally sharing that delicious food with us in Gurdon.

Excitement? You bet. You would think that six teachers sitting at a table to enjoy a lunch together could do so without any commotion, but believe me, it is most difficult to accomplish at CMS.

Just when it seems all is well, Mrs. Davies fails to get Mrs. Smithson's attention until she taps Smithson's leg with her foot. Well, that's when it happened, feeling the tap of course Mrs. S. thought the worse (a four-legged one) had her for sure and suddenly, but loudly, the screaming started.

Mrs. D. nearly choked on the apple she was eating and jumped from her chair (or did Debbie McBride jerk her from her chair?) In a flash, Mrs. Mc. was standing in the chair that two seconds before Mrs. D. was sitting in. There she stood, as though she was the Statue of Liberty herself, holding her skirt up and not seeing anything to be screamed at or if there had been, Lord knows it would have been long gone by that time.

Ms. Glass, an intern teacher from HSU assigned to Mrs. Green, was enjoying her lunch at what she probably expected to be a quiet and enjoyable time. She did not know what to do or which way to run with all that was going on. Hopefully, she can be encouraged to expect the unexpected.

Now if that was not enough, there's more. During Mrs. S.'s conference period she was in her classroom minding her own business, as she was working on the computer, when Mrs. D. entered the room and asked a question. Now you would think that a question could be asked without any trouble. Yeah, right!

In this case Mrs. D. had a big, big plastic (I think it was plastic) spider. What did she do, but threw it toward Mrs. S. (Better sit down for this one.) Well, the screaming started, but while trying to get away from what was believed to be a real spider, Mrs. S. shoved her chair and over went chair and Mrs. S. That's right! Feet were up in the air and Mrs. D. thought she had killed Mrs. S. and ran over to make sure.

Well fortunately the only source of injury was the blind in the window. If laughter is good for what ails you, we should all be very healthy around here.

Friday a pep rally for all three schools was conducted in the gym. The band sounded great and those cheerleaders excelled! The students were great loud and great! Homecoming royalty was announced. The King and Queen are Josh Griffin and Rachelle Reece.

County information is steadily arriving for the 7th graders that made request to update the file in the media center. Work is just starting.

We are observing Drug Free Week until Friday, October 30. An assembly will be held in the gym with several activities. The red chain will be broken and the name on the broken link will win a prize.

The Halloween costume contest will be the big event and we are looking forward to having several to judge from.

If you can come to the assembly, please feel welcome. The fun time begins at 10:00 a.m. and we will be looking for you as we are busy making those Classy Moments at CMS.
