Devils Enjoy New Gator Boots (cont)BY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, October 28, 1998 in the Gurdon Times 8 left in the game. The Gators started at their 32 and moved the ball downfield against Gurdon's second defensive unit. The drive took nine plays and was capped by a two-yard run by Phillips with 2:27 showing. The try for two was no good, but the goose egg was off the board as the Gators trailed 39-6. Neither team moved the ball for the remainder of the contest. Unofficial statistics show Gurdon's aerial attack on target as the Devils were three of five in the air for 88 yards and a touchdown. Foreman was 0-11 with two passes picked off. Gurdon only punted three times in the contest, for a 34-yard-per-kick average and no return yardage. Foreman, though, had seven punts for 195 total yards, allowing eight return yards. The Devils were heavily penalized in the game, seeing six flags land against them for 85 yards the wrong direction. Foreman saw more flags, but for less yardage, as the Gators moved backwards 43 yards. Both defenses recorded twin sacks in the game. The Devils put the ball on the ground twice, losing both, while Foreman had two fumbles, but recovered one. Once again, the front line did its job as the running backs amassed a total of 316 yards on 38 rushing attempts. Foreman ran 46 times for 124 yards. The only place the Gators led Gurdon was in total plays, as Foreman ran 57 offensive plays to Gurdon's 43. However, Gurdon did more with its snaps, piling up a total of 394 yards, while the defense gave up a scant 142, most of this in the second half. The Devils racked up 15 first downs, while Foreman had eight, but only two in the first half. Charles was again Gurdon's leading ground gainer, running for 129 yards on nine attempts. Hatley followed with five carries for 61 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Webster, in the second half, carried 10 times for a total of 26 yards. Hopson had three rushes for 16 yards and a touchdown. Allen ran four times, gaining 45 yards, while Joe Plyler had three carries for 19 yards. Mitchell's lone carry was good for 16 yards, with Meeks's carry gaining five yards. Colby Pace ran once for five yards. The win keeps Gurdon tied with Murfreesboro for the league title. Both teams are 4-0 and will meet Friday night in Murfreesboro to settle this score. The Rattlers took on the Horatio Lions and posted a 35-24 Saturday. Mineral Springs routed Dierks 50-6 and Stamps had little trouble with Lewisville, winning 54-21. Aside from Gurdon and Murfreesboro in the 7AA standings, Mineral Springs is third with its 4-2 conference mark and 4-3 overall record, while Horatio is fourth a 3-2 and 4-4. Foreman and Stamps are tied for fifth with 2-3 records, though the Gators are 4-4 overall and the Jackets are 3-5. Dierks and Lewisville are winless in league play. The Outlaws are 0-5, 1-5-1, with the Red Devils 0-6 and 0-8. Friday night, though, will pretty much be for all the marbles. Both Gurdon and Murfreesboro will be in the playoffs regardless, but the bragging rights are on the line, as is the conference championship. Gurdon will end its season with a homecoming game Nov. 6 against Horatio, while the Rattlers close out the regular campaign on the road against Foreman. Fans need to be sure and show their support for the Devils Friday night. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
