Classy Moments

Published Wednesday, November 4, 1998 in the Gurdon Times

The rally to get the Drug Free week off was a big success. Over 200 gathered at Gus Brown Field to enjoy the entertainment by Janise Jackson, the cheerleaders and the GHS marching band.

Several speeches were made to remind those in attendance how important it is to stay drug free. A special treat of hot dogs, chips and Coke was greatly enjoyed!

Mayor Rick Smith read a proclamation of acknowledgment for the week of October 26 through October 31 to be the official Drug Free Week for Gurdon.

Various activities were enjoyed by the students during Drug Free Week. Each student was given a red ribbon to wear each day. During first period, a name was drawn and if that student had the red ribbon, they received a Coke, compliments of Coca-Cola Bottling Company.

Wednesday was twin day. Various students dressed alike, as they were doubling up against drugs. It was a lot of fun seeing twins moving from class to class.

Thursday was tacky day. Now, we have not observed this one before, but it was such a hit, it probably will be on the agenda again. Students and some teachers came to school dressed just a little bit tacky to a whole bunch tacky. The fun was enjoyed by everyone.

Friday was the costume contest during the CMS Student Council assembly. Special judges, Mrs. Betsy Hurst, Mrs. Carolyn Crow and a very special 'mystery' judge did an excellent job in selecting the winning costumes.

This year we had two categories: store bought and homemade. The following were the winners: fifth grade store bought Brittney Talbert, clown costume; fifth grade homemade Brandon Smith, preacher with a sermon ready; sixth grade store bought Katie Barbaree, Cleopatra; sixth grade homemade Jordan Purifoy, Dorothy from Wizard of Oz; seventh grade store bought Marcel Anderson, Lord of the Sky; seventh grade homemade Heather Austin, 92- year-old woman; eighth grade store bought Lavonda Buford, Spider Woman; and eighth grade homemade Barak Gill, woman with unusual hair style.

Several teachers were asked to parade around in costumes and they were great. Mrs. Butler, Mrs. Smithey, Mrs. Roe, Mrs. Green, Mrs. Clark and 'Miss Wimmpey' (better known as Mr. Wimberly) as she was looking for a boyfriend!

After lunch the 'red chain' was taken out to the parking lot, as it had 800 links and required 14 students to hold it as Mr. Alexander would break the chain in various locations and the name that appeared on the broken link received a prize.

Our sincere appreciation to Pizza Shack, International Paper, Sonic Drive-In and Coca- Cola Bottling for contributing prizes. A very special thank you to Mike McKenzie for the wonderful prizes for the teachers. Mrs. Clingan especially thanks you.

We had a good week, one that allowed us to enjoy some fun for the promotion of the importance of saying no to drugs and one that allowed us some time to simply enjoy the company of each other. The students were great in the taking part in the activities, as were the teachers. Mrs. Franklin, you did a great job!

We enjoyed the Forest Festival and several of the students participated in the parade.

We extend out sympathy to Jill and Jake Plyler at the loss of their grandfather. We are a caring group of people as we continue to make those Classy Moments at CMS.
