Pirates Plunder Emmet In Roundball

Emmet's Eagles wound up getting scuttled by the Emerson Pirates Thursday, Oct. 22.

The senior boys were ambushed 63-46 in their game, as baskets were at a premium.

Don Paul Mitchell managed one conventional basket, but was a perfect 11-11 at the stripe to lead the Eagles with 13 points.

Emmet outscored Emerson 6-4 in the opening quarter, but couldn't keep up with the Pirates in the second period. At the half, the Eagles trailed 28-14. The 'Bucs opened their outside attack in the second frame, nailing a quartet of three-pointers.

Period three went a little better with the Eagles adding 12 to their side of the tally. However, the 'Bucs added 14 to go up 42-26.

While Mitchell was the lone Eagle to score in double figures, Marcus Smith added nine to the team's total.

J. Copeland led all scorers with 17 for Emerson, while J. Ward netted 13 and T. Robinson stroked the nylons for 11.

Emmet did shoot well from the free throw line, connecting on 21 of 25 shots. Emerson fired better than 50 percent, hitting 12 of 20.

Emmet's Lady Eagles are showing signs of improvement, though they fell 51-36 to the Lady 'Bucs.

The Lady Eagles, on the strength of Amanda Hodges's four points, posted a first quarter lead at 11-9. However, Emerson rallied on the second frame, again with the squad relying on a long-range attack, to go up 26-17. The Lady 'Bucs found the bottom of the net four times from beyond the arc in the second.

Period three saw both teams add eight points to their score, leaving Emmet trailing 34-25. The final eight minutes had Emmet outscored 17-11.

Hodges led the Lady Eagles with 18 total points, with Crystal Robinson adding eight.

Emerson's G. Baker led all scorers in the game with 21 points., including five treys.

Emmet, at the line, converted five of nine free throws. Emerson nailed seven of 13 at the stripe.

Emmet's junior girls found the going tough against the Lady 'Bucs as they fell 41-23.

The Lady Eagles found themselves on the short end of a 7-3 first quarter score, and trailed 26-7 at intermission. Emmet narrowed the gap by a point in the third, outscoring Emerson 11-10, but still trailed 36-18.

Amber Dougan led Emmet with 11 points.

Downey led Emerson with 13, while C. Glover canned 11.

Emmet was seven of 13 at the line, while Emerson converted seven of 19 free throws.

SPRING HILL 72

The Bears trip to Emmet included a bowl of Eagle stew as Spring Hill posted a 72-50 win.

The Bears opened strong, taking a 21-4 lead in the first eight minutes, stretching this to a 42-17 advantage by halftime. The situation didn't improve for Emmet as the Bears outscored the Eagles 15-11 in the third.

Mitchell again proved to be Emmet's offense as he poured in 19 points to lead the team.

N. Flowers, though, was the game's leading scorer with 29 for the Bears.

Emmet spent a lot of time at the charity stripe, and converted 16 of 29. Spring Hill went to the line 21 times, netting 12.

SPRING HILL 48

The Lady Eagles picked up the pace against Spring Hill, fighting hard before falling 48- 40.

The Lady Bears opened the contest with an 11-5 lead after one, and were up 27-20 at the break. Emmet was held in check in the third period as Spring Hill outscored the Lady Eagles 14- 5. The host team, though, outworked the visitors 15-7 in the final period.

Linda Stephens had the hot hand for the Lady Eagles as she ripped the cords for 20 points. Hodges netted 13 in the game.

A. Whatley paced Spring Hill with 21, while M. Harper added 15.

The Lady Eagles spent their fair share of time at the line, connecting on 13 of 29 free throw attempts. Spring Hill was four of 10 at the stripe.

The junior boys posted Emmet's lone win of the week, edging Spring Hill 43-41.

The Eagles trailed 9-8 at the end of the first period, but rallied to take a 14-12 halftime lead. Emmet added a point to its lead by the end of the third, going up 27-24 and held on for the win.

Kerry Love ripped the cords for 18 to lead Emmet, while Eugene Hopson was hot on his heels with 17.

C. Askew paces Spring Hill with 13, with M. Braddock adding 10.

Emmet was 11 of 19 at the line, while the Cubs were 15 of 34.
