Renovations Nearly DoneBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, November 11, 1998 in the Gurdon Times Renovations to Gurdon's City Hall are nearing completion and should be finished for the holiday season. Gurdon Mayor Rick Smith said the work is coming along nicely, with the glass enclosure for the meeting room in place. The walls have been primed for wallpaper and painting, with much of the painting being completed at this time. A fireproof storage area for the city's records has been constructed, with a heavy steel door installed to help prevent damage from extreme heat or flames in the event of a fire. Work to the restrooms is nearing completion, with both getting facelifts through the installation of wallpaper, with the facilities being made handicap accessible. A bit of plumbing remains to be done before these areas will be ready for public use. Glass doors now separate the water department from the rest of the city offices, with a security door by the Gurdon Police Department to keep people from roaming around City Hall after hours. The new kitchen in the community room is in place, complete with new appliances and a spanking new ice machine. The community room also has an electronic viewing screen so visitors can show slides or movies. There have been some delays, though, Smith said, with some of the wallpaper not yet in and floor covering not installed. However, he said, the contractor expects to be done by Thanksgiving. In the meantime, city employees and construction crews continue working around one another. Smith said the construction crews have been good to work with and have made the situation as tolerable as possible under the circumstances. Smith said plans are in the works to have an open house sometime in December. Once construction is finished, area residents are urged to come and look at the finished product. International Paper Co. donated lumber to the project so shelves could be built for the Gurdon Police Department needs, while the contractor agreed to donate the labor for the project. This, Smith said, is a big help as the city has not been out a cent for the renovations. The facelift was made possible through a grant to the city by the Cabe Foundation.
