Potential Disaster Is AvertedBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, November 18, 1998 in the Gurdon Times What could have been a disaster wasn't when a gas line was severed at Piggly Wiggly Wednesday, Nov. 11. According to reports from the Gurdon Police Department, a truck owned by J.B. Hunt and driven by L.V. Whitehead backed into a shopping cart behind the grocery store. The cart struck a block, which broke the gas line, causing natural gas to spew into the air. The store was evacuated, as was the Gurdon Senior Adult Center and Gurdon Day Care Center. Two units from the Gurdon Fire Department responded to the area and worked quickly to defuse the situation until a crew from Arkla Gas Co. could come in and repair the pipe. The broken pipe was severed near the store's furnace and incinerator. Both had to be shut down to prevent a possible explosion. Fireman Jimmy Martin was the hero of the day as he stepped on the gas line to slow the flow of gas, then plugged the line with a sharpened stick until it could be repaired.
