Harding Academy Sends Gurdon To Indoor Sports (cont)BY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, December 2, 1998 in the Gurdon Times ting sacked at the 49. He fumbled, but the ball bounced back to him, keeping the 'Cats in possession. Two plays later, Harding was at the Gurdon 37, with a measurement by the zebras giving them a first down. The Devils were nailed with a facemask call, followed immediately by a second unsportsmanlike conduct call and the ejection of Coach Randy Kizer. Yardage for both penalties was assessed against the Devils and the ball placed at the 15. However, time was running out and Gurdon was down to its last time out. Harding, however, helped out by getting hit with a clipping penalty and moved back to the 30. Still, the 'Cats forced Gurdon to burn their last time out and then simply ran out the clock. For the most part, the game was evenly played. Both teams punted three times, Gurdon for 80 yards, Harding for 91. The Devils were flagged seven times for 75 yards four major infractions with the 'Cats hit 10 times for 70 yards. Each team fumbled once and recovered their own loss. The two quarterbacks were sacked twice each by the opposing defense. Primarily because of penalties, Harding had 16 first downs to Gurdon's 11. The major difference in the final unofficial stats was the passing game. Allen was three of six for 29 yards, while Collier was six of 15 for 71 yards. Gurdon ran a total of 43 offensive plays, while Harding had 47. The Devil's ground attack gained 192 yards, while Harding rushed for 175. Harding held the edge in total yardage at 246-221. Hopson carried the mail 19 times for 89 yards, while Hatley had eight carries pay off for 79 yards. Allen rushed eight times for 11 yards, with Adrian Meeks getting one carry, but no gain. Cox carried once for 13 yards and Gurdon's only touchdown. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
