Lions Club Auction Dec. 10,11BY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, December 2, 1998 in the Nevada County Picayune It's time once again for the 25th Annual Prescott Lions Club Auction. This year's auction will be held Dec. 10-11 at the Nevada County Courthouse. The auction will begin at 6 p.m. each night, lasting until 10 o'clock or until everything has been auctioned off. Money made from the auction is used by the club to purchase Christmas baskets and toys for the area's needy people. In addition, the funds are used to help sponsor the club's Little League baseball team, buy glasses for those who can't afford them, help support Lions World Services for the Blind and other agencies helping the area's less fortunate. Club members, between now and Dec. 10, will be asking individuals and merchants for donations of items to be auctioned off. During the fiscal year 1997-98, the Lions Club donated $1,340 to the Nevada County Weather Center to purchase a weather computer system; provided funds for 16 eye exams and glasses; donated a picnic table for the Mid-South Lions Sight Auction in Memphis; donated $400 to the Nevada County Rescue Unit toward the purchase of a boat, motor and trailer; gave a $1,000 scholarship to a county senior high school student; gave a $500 scholarship to a graduating county senior; provided $300 to the Prescott Shuttle to buy meals for a school trip; gave $300 to the PHS band for six half scholarships to the Henderson State University Band Camp; contributed to a talking printer for the Lions World Services for the Blind in Little Rock; gave $300 to Prescott 16 and under AAU Youth Sports; sponsored a baseball team; sponsored a Boy Scout troop with $500; gave $100 to the Prescott-Nevada County Chamber of Commerce to buy trees for a beautification project; and donated $20 to Henry's Lights at the Nevada County Courthouse. Other contributions made by the club include: $200 to the family of a terminally ill Nevada County teen cancer patient; $200 to the family of a hospitalized county teen; $250 to Leader Dogs for the Blind; manned gates at the Nevada County Fair; donated $1,000 to Mid-South Lions Sight in Memphis; gave $1,220 to LWSB; provided $50 to the American Diabetes Association for a youth summer camp scholarship at Morrilton; and operated concession stands at the Chicken and Egg Festival, political rally, fair and Christmas on the Square. The club also held the 24th Annual Lions Club Auction; bought 29 Christmas baskets for needy county residents; delivered food baskets to all residents in Prescott nursing homes; bought clothes and toys for five needy area families; and donated $1,000 to Operation Breadbasket in Prescott. These donations and contributions were made possible largely because of items donated at the 1997 auction. The club asks area residents and businesses continue donating items for the auction so it can keep working to make Nevada County a better place for everyone.
