PRESCOTT 70
Published Wednesday, December 9, 1998 in the Nevada County PicayuneGURDON 36 Victim 449 for Cossey was Prescott's long-time arch-rival Gurdon. The Wolverettes were merciless against their former conference foe as they posted a 70- 36 win. Prescott took the tip, got the ball to Graham, who promptly nailed a three-pointer. From there, the Wolverettes ran out to a 7-2 lead with 5:09 left in the opening frame. Gurdon's defense collapsed inside all night, trying to deny short shots to the Wolverettes, but Prescott's girls only stepped out and shot from the wing. This was mainly Cossey, who, unbelievably, was left wide open beyond the arc and busted threes at every chance, and finished the game with 19 points. Those in the paint, however, suffered for their attempts to drive. The Lady Devils punished all who ventured in the lanes. Period one ended with the score 17-7 in Prescott's favor. On Nov. 10, the Wolverettes ventured into Lady Devil land and posted a 75-52 win. Their goal on this night was to sweep Gurdon for the season. Prescott played most of the second quarter without Graham's services. With 7:00 left in the half, she was saddled with her third foul and did a bit of pine riding, involved in the game as a cheerleader for the Wolverettes. Didn't matter. The rest of the crew just kept pounding away at the Lady Devils, with the officials kept busy watching the brutally physical action. Gurdon pressed hard and fought for each rebound. But, the Lady Devils couldn't buy a basket on the night, while the Wolverettes were more consistent from the field and line. With 4:35 left in the half, Prescott held a 23-11 lead and was pulling away. Stockton took over duties as point guard for the Wolverettes, taking the ball down court, dishing to the first open player seen, or shooting when left unchecked. Still, the Lady Devils forced several turnovers, but couldn't capitalize on the Prescott mistakes. Prescott and Gurdon substituted frequently because of the foul situation. Most of the second period saw both crews in the bonus situation. With the score 34-16, and 1:05 left in the half, Gurdon was hit with a technical foul. This sent Stockton to the line with four free throws. She converted three to put the game all but out of reach. Halftime came with Prescott up by 20 with the score 37-17. Nothing changed in the third quarter, shoulder pads and helmets would have been appropriate for the level of contact on the floor, but Prescott increased its lead to 45-23 with 4:38 left in the third. Only the score changed during the third eight minutes, as the two teams raced helter skelter up and down the court, firing at will and pounding one another in the process. By the time the buzzer sounded to end the third, Prescott had doubled Gurdon 54-27. The final frame saw Prescott get serious on both sides of the ball, as they settled in for an early season route. With 7:09 remaining and Prescott leading 60-27, the Wolverettes were in the bonus to make Gurdon's life even more miserable. In year's past, the Wolverettes lacked the killer instinct and let teams back in late in games. The past is dead. Now, the Wolverettes bare their fangs and tear into the flesh of their wounded opposition in an effort to rip their heart out. Prescott opened the fourth quarter with an 11-0 run to all but end the game. Cossey began sending in subs with 5:39 left and Prescott leading 65-27. The replacement players took up where the starters left off, with surgical precision in slicing through the Lady Devil defense, while applying an offense stopping defense of their own. Cossey cleared the bench with 2:30 left as all left to be determined was the final score. Andrea Cossey and Stockton were the game's leading scorers with 19 each. Graham, in spite of her foul trouble netted 13. Jeanie Haynie added an even dozen. Tiffany Ware was the lone Lady Devil in double figures with 10. Prescott was 17 of 25 from the line, while Gurdon connected on seven of 20. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
