Gurdon's Junior Girls Runners Up In Blevins Tourney

Sometimes, the best games in tournaments happen before the finals.

This was the case in the Blevins Junior Tournament Saturday, Dec. 5, as Gurdon's junior girls had little left and fell to Nashville 42-28.

The Lady Devils made the trip to the final round by taking Nevada's Lady Blue Jays out of the equation in the first round. They eliminated the host team, Blevins, in round two.

Blevins ousted Prescott in the first tilt, while Nashville breezed by Emmet. Spring Hill also beat Hope in round one.

Nashville routed Spring Hill to earn a date against Gurdon in the finals.

Gurdon won the opening tip, went down and scored. The game began with the appearance of a real barn-burner.

The Scrapperettes played a 1-3-1 defense, while Gurdon worked a man.

After the first basket, Nashville rallied and reeled off the next six to go up 6-2.

The Lady Devils had their chances, but had fits finding the bottom of the basket.

Period one ended with Gurdon trailing 10-6.

Nashville was in the bonus quickly as the second quarter opened, while Gurdon began working to slow the pace of the game.

Still, action went back and forth, with Nashville hitting and Gurdon still having problems getting the ball to stay inside the iron.

At the half, Nashville led 22-10.

The Lady Devils rallied to open the second half and scored the first five points of the third quarter.

Gurdon's press forced Nashville turnovers and the Lady Devils cut the lead to 22-18 before the Scrapperettes woke up and pushed their lead to 26-18 with four quick points.

As the period neared its end, Gurdon stole the ball, drove downcourt and nailed a layup with four seconds showing to cut the score to 30-24.

This was the last serious salvo the Lady Devils would fire in the game as they got in foul trouble in the final period.

Nashville took advantage of this and worked the clock, forcing the Lady Devils to foul.
