Rotarians Get To PlayBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, December 9, 1998 in the Gurdon Times Members of the Gurdon Rotary Club got to play at their last meeting. This is because Sherry Carr, the media specialist at Gurdon Primary School presented a program on communication. She provided examples of communicating devices cups with strings asking the members to "talk" with one another. The "phones" were of a variety of designs, plastic cups with heavy twine, Styrofoam cups with thin twin and tin cans with wire. At GPS, Carr said, books are the primary method of communication used, though there are some computers in the library. Thanks to a grant from the Cabe Foundation, the school's computer reading program was upgraded recently, and two new computers were purchased. She said students are taught how to utilize the resources in the library and how to use books. "Children learn from what they read," she said, "and it gives them better comprehension" GPS has two new programs being used this year. One is the Charley May Simon Award, where 15 books are picked to be read by students in grades 4-6. The students then vote on the books, along with students from across the state, with the winning book getting the award. The other statewide program involves students in grades K-6 and is called the Arkansas Diamond Award. Most of the books in this program are picture books and short stories. Students do reports on them once they have read the books. Carr said it's important for children to love ready as it helps them grow mentally.
