Tours Given By Arkansas Historic Preservation ProgramPublished Tuesday, December 15, 1998 in the Nevada County PicayuneThe Arkansas Historic Preservation Program (AHPP), an agency of the Department of Arkansas Heritage, will lead tours of historic areas across the state during 1999 through its 'Walks Through History' program, as well as tours of Little Rock and North Little Rock landmarks through the 'Sandwiching in History' series, State Historic Preservation officer Cathy Slater announced Dec. 9. The free 'Walks Through History' tours are held monthly beginning in March and explore the history and architecture of noteworthy Arkansas neighborhoods and historic districts. Tours during 1999 will be held March 6 in downtown Van Buren, April 3 in downtown Osceola, May 1 in Fort Smith's Belle Grove neighborhood, June 5 in Pine Bluff, June 26 in Newport's historic residential area, August 7 in downtown Prescott, September 11 in Monticello's North Main Street historic district, October 2 in downtown Harrison, November 6 in Texarkana and December 4 in downtown Jonesboro. All tours begin at 1 p.m. except the June and August program which will begin at 10 a.m. The 'Sandwiching in History' lecture series provides a Friday opportunity to visit historic properties in central Arkansas while learning about historic preservation and restoration of historic sites. Tours during 1999 will be held January 8 at Little Rock City Hall, February 5 at the Women's City Club in Little Rock, March 5 at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church in Little Rock, April 2 at T.R. Pugh Memorial park (the Old Mill) in North Little Rock, April 30 at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Little Rock, June 4 at First Baptist Church in Little Rock, June 25 at the Fones House in Little Rock, August 6 at the Manees House in North Little Rock, September 10 at the Argenta Rock Island Depot in North Little Rock, October 1 at the Terminal Warehouse in Little Rock, November 5 at the Pulaski County Courthouse in Little Rock, and December 3 at Little Rock's Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. All tours begin at noon, and participants are invited to bring their lunch with them. Ken Story, the AHPP's preservation outreach coordinator, leads each of the tours.
