Wolverettes Tame Lions; Over Run RedbugsBY JOHN MILLERPublished Tuesday, December 15, 1998 in the Nevada County Picayune Bismarck and Fordyce found out what others know about the Wolverettes they're tough to beat. Actually, neither of these teams accomplished this task, and both were handily dispatched. Friday, Dec. 11, Bismarck's Lady Lions visited and returned home with their mane's clipped and tails tucked as the Wolverettes whipped them 75-41 in a game not as close as the score indicates. For the first two minutes of the contest, it looked as if the Lady Lions had come to play. For the remaining 30 minutes, it was a track meet for Prescott's senior girls. The Lady Lions managed to score first, as the Bismarck defense appeared to baffle Prescott. The passing lanes were filled with Lady Lions, and passes normally easily made were picked off. Fouls, though, proved to be a problem for Bismarck, as the Lady Lions didn't keep their hands where they belonged. Prescott's first six points came from the free throw line, with the Wolverettes going to the stripe 13 times in the frame, converting 10. With 5:33 remaining in the opening stanza, Prescott led 6-2 and decided to press this broke the game wide open. Bismarck would score once more in the period, while Prescott pretty much scored at will. Still, Prescott's first field goal came with 3:52 remaining. At the 4:00 mark, Prescott was in the bonus, and when the buzzer ended the period, the Wolverettes were in the double bonus, shooting two free throws each time up to the line. Period one ended with the score 21-4 in Prescott's favor. Prescott's press, both half and full court, was more than Bismarck's girls could handle though the two teams met a scant week earlier. The Wolverettes reeled off five quick points and hustled up and down the court. Wherever the ball was, a maroon clad Wolverette was there as well. At the 6:35 mark it was 26-4, two minutes later the score rose to 32-4 as Prescott literally owned Bismarck. Coach Bill Cossey substitute freely during the first half, and let the subs play most of the second half. The starters saw action about four minutes of the third quarter. Bismarck's first points of the second quarter came with 4:11 showing, as the Lady Lions converted a pair of free throws. Prescott slowed the game down somewhat, being more patient on offense, working the ball around the perimeter, looking for a good shot. The Lady Lions's first field goal came with 2:04 left in the half, but the score was considerably lopsided in Prescott's favor. Halftime saw Prescott up 43-15. Time off during the break did little to help the Lady Lions, as the Wolverettes returned to the court and simply hammered away. Prescott controlled the offense. Prescott controlled the defense. Prescott controlled the pace of the game, as well as the tempo of play and Bismarck was helpless to do anything about it. The Wolverettes opened with a 7-2 run to start the third quarter, with Cossey substituting heavily. The period ended with Prescott up 72-23 and all five starters watching the game from the sidelines. Unfortunately, the fourth quarter was meaningless with the exception of the Prescott bench getting valuable minutes. Bismarck, though outscoring the Wolverettes 18-3, had almost no chance whatsoever at winning. Traci Graham led all scorers with 22 points in the contest. Stacy Stockton was next in line with 20, while Andrea Cossey contributed 11. Kreuger led Bismarck with eight points. The Wolverettes were 19 of 25 from the line, while the Lady Lions converted eight of 13 free throws. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
