School Board Discusses Closing Street

Lack of a quorum kept the Emmet School Board from conducting any business during its Dec. 7 meeting.

However, those board members present did hear reports from the two principals and the superintendent.

On the elementary side, enrollment is rising, currently up to 188.

Students in the third and fourth grades attended a play in Texarkana, having a good time on the trip. The students were said to be well behaved while there and en route.

Unfortunately, those in elementary school are facing semester tests this week. Testing will be done Thursday and Friday, with the Christmas break starting at the end of the day Friday.

Members of the faculty and staff attended a Smart Start workshop in Little Rock recently. There they learned the program is geared toward student achievement in math and reading. The students and school are held responsible for the overall results.

Two students from the second grade reported on a field trip to Mid America Museum in Hot Springs.

The boys brought photos and booklets made by the students of their adventure. The board was entertained by their descriptions of what was at the museum and how it worked.

The count for the high school side is 120, with progress reports being sent to parents for the second time. However, it was pointed out there were fewer reports sent this time than the last.

It was suggested to close the street in front of the school building as there are more students at Emmet than ever before. This would help insure the safety of the students during the day, if the Emmet City Council agrees to close the street.

Board member Jack Faulkner said the district would have to take the issue before the council, but expected no problems in having the street closed.

The January board meeting will be held Monday, Jan. 11, instead of Jan. 4, as this is the day students return from their holiday break.

The board may meet in special session later this month to clear up loose ends from the Dec. 7 meeting.
