Classy MomentsPublished Wednesday, December 23, 1998 in the Gurdon TimesI hope you and your family are enjoying the holidays and all of the rushing about that goes with it. We are out of school until Monday, January 4. Can you believe a new year already? We completed the first semester of this school year Friday, December 18, so when we get back in school we will be starting the second and last semester for the school year. Several classrooms were decorated with Christmas items, making the spirit of the holiday very evident and most enjoyable. We even had Santa Claus himself to make a visit in the classrooms. Believe me, he was really a jolly old elf. The Beta Club inducted 14 new members and installed new officers. President is Claya Calley; Lynsey McKenzie, vice president; Tracy Coplen, secretary; Jamie Smith, treasurer; and Heath Griffin, reporter. Sponsors for the Beta Club are Mrs. Bullard and Mrs. Clark. The Cabe Middle School Student Council conducted its talent show Friday and it was a big success. Several students shared their talents with the audience. Several songs, dance routines and musical instruments, such as drums, horns and keyboards, were used by some of the students to share talents. A big thank you to Mr. Burnson for his willingness to help set up drums for the students. A visitor in the audience was called upon to sing a song, and immediately Quincy Charles, former Gurdon graduate, went upon the stage and sang Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, which was simply beautiful. You would have to search long and far, far away to find talent even partially of what is found in Gurdon. If one person had to be named for 'stealing' the show, it would have to be Rex Potter. Rex sang New York, New York. Due to the absence of a student who was to have provided the sound for a group that was rapping a song, Mrs. Roe, Mrs. Butler and Mrs. Clingan were trying to make the needed sounds, but Rex came up from the audience and told them 'to get off the stage, as he could do a better job' and believe me, he was great. The faculty and staff of Cabe Middle School enjoyed a barbecue dinner with all of the trimmings at their school. They were treated as royalty as everything was provided. The guests just attended and enjoyed the delicious food and fellowship. They enjoyed a couple of games and a story that was read to them by Mrs. Clingan: The Three Little Wolves and the Big, Bad Pig. It was an evening that was enjoyed by the 41 who attended. They are looking forward to next year. The food drive at CMS provided three boxes each to six families. Mrs. Clingan's class brought more food items and will enjoy a special treat after the holidays. It is such a good feeling seeing students sharing with others. The Student Council collected, sorted and gift wrapped each of the boxes that were taken to special families. The secret Santa among the faculty and staff were exchanged and so many nice gifts were enjoyed. Before you know it, we will be taking down the Christmas decorations and getting back in our routine and, of course, we will be making those Classy Moments at CMS. Merry Christmas to all.
