Second Annual Food Drive Feeds 30 FamiliesBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, December 30, 1998 in the Gurdon Times Some 30 families were helped through the second annual Gurdon Times/Rotary Club food drive. Last year a total of 21 families received boxes filled with foodstuff, while the number increased this holiday season. The severe weather Wednesday didn't stop the last minute deliveries, as the final six boxes were carried across town. Three with the aid of Gurdon Police Department officer Frank Plasek, who also was kind enough to pick up the chicken at Petit Jean Poultry this year. The rest of the baskets were delivered by members of the Gurdon Rotary Club, staff of the Times and some special help from youngsters Delton Simpson works with. These young people were instrumental in getting the food boxes prepared, filled and delivered to the proper homes. The drive wouldn't have been as successful without their help. Tambra Smith, city recorder/treasurer and Rotary treasurer, lauded all who worked on this year's drive. "It was very successful," she said, "and we thank everyone who pitched in and helped." This includes State Rep. Percy Malone, International Paper Co., Coca Cola of Camden, Meyer's Bakeries of Hope, Thomason's Big Star and Petit Jean Poultry. Smith also thanked the Gurdon school district and students, along with the Gurdon High School Band for their efforts. Students in primary and middle school brought donations of non-perishable items to give to their fellow citizens in an effort to make the holiday brighter for everyone. The GHS band program "charged" admission of a non-perishable food item for its annual concert. "It was wonderful the way the people of Gurdon pitched in to help those less fortunate," Smith said. However, next year's food drive will see some changes. Guidelines and applications may be instituted to make sure the food boxes are going to people who are truly needy. While the holiday food drive has ended successfully for the second straight year, collection of food items, along with blankets and clothing continue. The Gurdon Times will continue to accept donations of non-perishable foods, along with blankets and clothing. These items will be given to victims of disasters, such as fires. The Times will be used as a temporary place to house these items until a more permanent location can be found. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
