Miller Addresses Council

Published Wednesday, December 30, 1998 in the Nevada County Picayune

One of the greater activities sponsored by the Boys To Men-Girls To Women Coalition, took place on Thursday evening, November 19.

Virgil Miller, vice president of Nations Bank in Little Rock was the guest speaker.

Introduced by Tammarra Harris, Miller did a spectacular job in getting the youths to learn to make the right decision regardless of how hard it may be, especially in view of their peer group.

There were 240 persons registered and approximately 50 others persons who failed to register.

This turned out to be a very successful celebration in that the program featured the youths being in charge of the ceremony.

Rafael Morrow and Tiffany Young were the emcees. Darryl Tidwell gave the invocation for the delicious turkey dinner.

The Boys to Men - Girls to Women choir, which had been organized for about two weeks before this program, sang two beautiful songs under the direction of Yvonne Thomas.

Students were recognized as honor students in the coalition and were awarded certificates. They sponsored a poem writing competition 'What Thanksgiving Means To Me.'

Joyce Gibson presented certificates of appreciated to 19 students in the elementary, middle and high schools. The winner of each school received a Wal-Mart/ Sam's Club gift card in the amount of $20.

The first place winners were Brittany Holleman, elementary; Sophia Dunn, middle; and Lakeita Gulley, high school. Each of these winners read their poem, which was well received, to the audience.

The 'Boys To Men-Girls To Women Coalition' is a non-profit organization, established to help at risk young men and women to avoid the use of drugs, alcohol, tobacco and gang violence, and to assist them in becoming productive citizens in our society.
