Bluff City

After being absent for many years from the country paper, the Bluff City area is now being represented again with a local news column. I am only reporting temporarily until a permanent reporter can be found. We may not get the news in each week's paper, but we will do our best.

For those of you who are not acquainted with our little burg, we are located in the northeaster part of Nevada County on Highway 24. We only have one store. Bluff City is one of the oldest settlements in Nevada County and is named for the high bluff where the town is located. Many people have ties to this community, so maybe some news from this area will be appreciated.

Most everyone in the community had their families home for the holidays. We all ate too much, but that's to be expected this time of the year. It seems to me Thanksgiving and Christmas are too close together.

First, I'll mention our sick folks. Bill Sellers is at home after having back surgery in Little Rock just before Christmas. He had been having trouble with his back for some time. Hopefully, he will be much better now. This has been a trying week for the Sellers family. Bill's mother, Margaret Katie Sellers, passed away December 20. Funeral services were held in Stephens on December 22. Bill was scheduled for surgery the next day. On top of this, the weather acted up and they had to worry about getting home on the icy roads. As it turned out, they got home just before the roads got bad.

A graveside funeral service was held Sunday, December 27, at Bluff City Cemetery for Novice Bell Norman. She lived in Tennessee, but lived in this community many years ago.

Several young people from Bluff City participated in a Christmas parade in Chidester a few days ago. They brought home a trophy, winning first place for being 'The Most Enthusiastic.' Participating were Casey, Tyler and Brady Carman and Judd and Seth Lusk.

Millard and Elloene McBride had company for the holidays. Their son and daughter-in- law, Doug and Sarah, were there from Austin, Texas, with two of their sons, Brady and Bradley. Also visiting were Lloyd and Pearl Henson. Pearl is Elloene's sister. They will be leaving for Zambia, Africa, in a few days where they have been doing missionary work for many years.

Bill and Linda Carman had their home decorated well for the holidays. It's hard to miss when you are traveling on Highway 24 into Bluff City, but don't look too long. They live near a sharp curve.

James and Kay Nelson had their family members home the weekend before Christmas. Andy and Elizabeth were there with their two children, Lexi and Lauren. Vince and Tony were also there with their two children, Tyler and Lindsey. I'm sure James and Kay could use the extra help gathering eggs. I understand his chickens are laying about 15,000 eggs per day now.

The McKelvy family gathered at the old home place on Sycamore Hill for Christmas dinner. Out of town guests were Jerry and Jeanie McKelvy from Camden and Billy and Robbie McKelvy and son, Adam, from De Queen. Their daughter, Ashley, was unable to be there since she is studying this semester in Cork, Ireland. She is scheduled to return home in a few days and resume her studies at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville and Adam will return to Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia.

Hopefully, we will be able to keep this column going for a while this time. Get your news together and let it be known so that we might report it in a future column.

Our though for the week is a quote from M.W. Little: "No man feels like laughing when he bumps his funny bone."
