Bluff CityJerry McKelvyPublished Wednesday, September 29, 1999 in the Nevada County Picayune I haven't heard of any late breaking news from our little burg this week, so I will use this space to mention an item or two from Septembers of years past. The nice fall weather is refreshing even if it is still dry. It has even been difficult to get turnips to come up this fall. I checked back in my notes and found that the dry, hot summer of 1980 ended in late September of that year with about ten inches of rain in Bluff City. History may repeat itself. It was also in September of 1978 that Little Rock was flooded. Ten people drowned and for a time there was no way out of Little Rock by highway. Here are some from this area who passed away in the month of September from 1970 until the present: Lucy Lee Harvey (1970); Minnie Henry (1971); John Hildre Griffith (1971); Jesse Weaver Hesterly (1973); Dester Jones (1978); Ollie Peck Nichols (1978); Gladys Franklin (1996) and Dillard Sarrett (1996). I'm sure many of you will remember these folks and the contributions they made while they were living in this area. Here's a puzzle for the local folks: Take the number of the highway leading from Bluff City to White Oak Lake State Park; subtract the population of Bluff City; divide by 4; subtract the number of miles from Bluff City to Camden; add the number of stores in Bluff City; and your answers should be the number of miles from Bluff City to Prescott. A thought: With the proper diet, rest and exercise a healthy body will last a lifetime.' Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
