Classy Moments

Published Wednesday, January 13, 1999 in the Gurdon Times

Rain and more rain. At least it seems as though it has rained since we got back to school after the wonderful holiday break. The students go to their home rooms after they eat lunch, as it was either too cold or too wet for them to be outside. Therefore, it seems to make the days a little bit longer for the teachers, if you know what I mean!

Uthel Gatlin made a visit to Mrs. Clingan Wednesday. It certainly made her day a happy one, as Uthel has been in Children's Hospital after an accidental shooting to his left hand. He was to go back to the doctor on Friday for a check-up. We are anxious to hear the report. Maybe he can get back to school soon.

The eighth graders welcomed a new student who transferred from El Dorado. We always enjoy having new students come to Cabe Middle School, but one thing for sure, we do not like to have our students transfer to another school. (Guess you could say we are a little greedy or slightly selfish.)

The Nolan Richardson Shoot-Out for United Cerebral Palsy will be conducted Tuesday, January 17, during the first and second periods in the high school gym.

Students can take part in this by getting people to make a pledge for each basket that they make from anywhere on the basketball court during a three-minute period.

The money goes to United Cerebral Palsy, as this is not a fund- raiser for our school. These funds are used to help provide therapy, job training and independent living skills for children and adults with disabilities.

The CMS Student Council has been involved in fund-raising for a charity for about 11 years. Students can earn different awards depending upon the number of baskets they make or the amount of money they collect.

Report cards were sent home Thursday, January 7. We started the second semester Monday, January 4, so hopefully those who have low grades will get busy and work hard to improve those grades.

The seventh and eight graders were very busy getting schedules changed for the second semester. It's almost like starting another year of school. (I would think that Mr. Alexander is glad that is over.) Several students are still 'lost' since they changed some classes.

I understand that Mrs. Hitt's choir has new talent for her to work with. It is good to see that class increase in size.

The new building is coming right along, or going right on up, which ever fits the progress best. Mrs. Hitt and Mrs. Downey are anxious for their classrooms to be completed so they can make the final move and enjoy their new environment.

New clothes, shoes and jewelry have been worn by several students, after the visit from Santa. They also told about the new computers, VCRs, TVs, play stations, Nintendo 64's and other nice items that Santa left for them. My, how times have changed!

Our building looked simply beautiful when we returned from the holidays, as the workers had waxed the floors and one could almost see their reflection by looking at the floor. We do appreciate what they do to keep our building clean.

We have to remind some of the students to clean their feet before entering the building. They do not think about the mess that rain and dirt mixed together can do to a floor.

Monday, January 18, we will be out of school to observe Martin Luther King's birthday, so parents get ready for a long weekend!

I have not checked with the Gurdon Times to see if any calls were made to tell them you enjoy the article, but I hope you did and I will be checking with them. It is never a dull moment making those Classy Moments at Cabe Middle School.
