Lucy Cabe To Be Honored In FebruaryPublished Wednesday, January 20, 1999 in the Gurdon TimesPhilanthropist Lucy Lockett Cabe will be honored February 26 as the 1999 Arkansan of the year by Easter Seals Arkansas. She will receive the award at a dinner celebration at the Embassy Suites in west Little Rock. The $125 per person dinner will be held from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the Ambassador Ballroom. Easter Seals Arkansan of the year award recognizes outstanding Arkansans who have made significant contributions to the state. Past honorees include Systematics founder Walter Smiley; U.S. Rep. Ray Thornton; White House advisor Mack McLarty; the late attorney Herschel H. Friday; trucking magnates, J.B. and Johnelle Hunt; Don Tyson of Tyson Foods, Inc.; Aromatique owner Patti Upton; Dr. George K. Mitchell, retired president and CEO of Arkansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield; and Gov. Frank White. As trustee of the Horace C. Cabe Foundation, which was formed in 1993 after the death of her brother-in-law Harold Cabe, Ms. Cabe has been instrumental in improving the lives of Arkansans by investing in educational, cultural, religious and healthcare organizations throughout the state. "Lucy is a remarkable individual who looks for a need in her community and fills it," said Sharon Moone-Jochums, Easter Seals president and CEO. "She is never still for long and finds great joy in enriching the lives of others. It is because of her unfailing dedication to her fellow man that we salute her as out 1999 Arkansan of the year." Music has always been an integral part of Ms. Cabe's life and she is a strong supporter of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, Wildwood Park for the Performing Arts and many other arts organizations throughout the state. Reflecting her love of music, the theme for the event is "She's Music to Our Ears." The Arkansas Symphony String Quartet will provide musical entertainment. Ms. Cabe has served on the boards of Camp Aldersgate, the United Methodist Children's Home and Easter Seals. Currently she serves on the boards for Wildwood Park for the Performing Arts, the Arkansas Symphony and the Little Rock Wind Symphony. Ms. Cabe is also active in the Central Arkansas Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, the Little Rock Musical Coterie, the Little Rock Garden Club and the Rackensack Society. She performs regularly with the Cantorias, a group of the Little Rock Musical Coterie. Throughout the years, Cabe has received recognition for her contributions to the state. In 1975, Gov. Winthrop Rockefeller appointed her to the first Advisory Council to the Office of Arts and Humanities. In 1986, she was selected as Woman of the Year by the Arkansas Democrat- Gazette and was honored in 1993 with the Arkansas Arts Council's Lifetime Achievement Award. KATV Channel 7, the Arkansas Symphony, Henderson State University, Twin City Printing, Arkla, NationsBank, Southwestern Bell and Vratsinas Construction Company are generously sponsoring the Arkansan of the Year event. Radio personality Craig O'Neill will emcee. For over fifty years, Easter Seals has championed the independence of people with disabilities through quality rehabilitation services, technological assistance, advocacy and public relations.
