BLUE JAYS/ROADRUNNERS

Published Wednesday, January 20, 1999 in the Nevada County Picayune

It looked like a long night for the Blue Jays as the powerfully-ranked Roadrunners controlled the early-going of the game, hitting from every angle of the court. They led 23-12 after the first quarter.

But sometimes a team just can't do anything, and sometimes the other team can't do much better. This happened to two teams in the second period when the Blue Jays only allowed six points for the Roadrunners, but the Jays only scored eight themselves.

The two teams went at each other again in the third period with both hitting baskets. Stephens scored 21 and Nevada scored 20, hitting four 3-pointers during the period.

The Blue Jays kept pecking away in the final period and put four more 3-pointers in to narrow the score, but came out losers 74-64.

Stephens Coach Richard Bradley said after the game that his team sure didn't look like a championship team, and if they played like that in the state this year they would not be.

Antonio Glover of Stephens was the game's leading scorer with 25 points. Three more Roadrunners scored in double figures: Reggie Todd with 20 points, and Steve Todd and Andre Marsh with 11 each.

Julius Gulley led Nevada with 23 points, followed by Marcus Harper with 12.

Others scoring for the Jays were Jamarrio Beasley with 8 points, Keon Page with 6, and Erik Haynie and Geoffrey Box each scored 2 points.

The week before three Nevada teams swept the Lewisville Red Devils in conference games on January 5.

The senior boys won 58-45, the Lady Blue Jays won 51-26, and the junior boys won 44- 14.

Recarto King scored 12 points to lead the juniors in their victory. A large host players scored for Nevada since every one was able to play.

Others scoring were Mathews Young with 8 points; Ronald Pearson with 7; Anthony Page, Reco Mixon and Johnny Robinson had 4 points apiece; Johnathan House, Jory Collins each scored 2 points; and Eli Carlow finished with 1.
