WOLVES 64
Published Wednesday, January 20, 1999 in the Nevada County PicayuneSCRAPPERS 49 Prescott's 10th ranked Curley Wolves did a little shopping at the start of their game against Nashville Friday night. Early on, the game was going a bit slower than they liked, so they purchased some "pace" and heated things up en route to a 64-49 win. For the first couple of minutes, the Scrappers did what they wanted and forced the game to be played their way. This didn't set well with the Wolves, who began pressing, forcing turnovers and converting them into easy buckets. Once the press was in place, the Scrappers had problems getting the rock past midcourt. Period one ended with Prescott holding a 22-14 lead. Coach Matt McClure continued pressing in the second quarter to keep Nashville off balance and the Wolves added a little to their lead, going into the lockers up 39-30 at the break. The situation continued in the third, with Prescott leading 49-39 when the buzzer sounded ending the frame. "I was impressed with the way we played after I watched the film," McClure said. "Nashville has a good team, but we wore them out." Brandon Wilson led the Wolves with 17 points in the contest. Andrew Fellows and Brian Woodley each contributed 14 to the winning cause. Willie Scott paced Nashville with 16,while Mike Finley had 13. McClure, pleased with the way his team played, said if the Wolves play their game, they can take care of business on the court. Now, however, each and every game is vital as all remaining contests are conference tilts. The Wolves and Wolverettes must continue improving, and winning, as the season winds down and tournament time draws near. This year's district tourney will be held at Fouke. Should the Prescott squads finish in the top four at district, they will be making their way to Hamburg where the regional tourney will be. Once the regional contests are over with, it will be on to state, which will be at Fountain Lake this year. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
