Prescott Rude Guests; Takes Two From Nashville

Prescott's Wolverettes were flat to start Friday night's game against Nashville.

They missed their first eight shots and trailed 4-0 three minutes into the contest.

However, the Wolverettes reached back and rolled to a 66-27 win by the time the game ended.

The Scrapperettes opened by scoring the first four points, while Prescott had problems handling the snail's pace of the outing.

The Wolverettes put up shot after shot, only to see the ball bounce off the rim and into an orange-clad Nashville player's hands.

With 5:00 showing in the first, Prescott was able to tie the game at 4-4 against the slower Nashville team.

A few seconds later, the Wolverettes took a 6-4 lead and never looked back.

The officials called a tight game, slowing the pace even more, with whistle after whistle stopping play and keeping both teams from getting in a solid rhythm.

Late in the first quarter the Wolverettes had a "mini" run to pull away to a 15-6 lead.

Nashville was in the bonus to start the second quarter, but the Wolverettes were ready to dominate the game, in spite of the slow pace.

After a Scarpperette basket, Prescott picked up the intensity of play, though not the pace, and move the score to 19-8 with 5:35 showing.

For some reason, Nashville went into a stall while down by 11. The offense was similar to the old four corners popular in college basketball before the advent of the shot clock.

However, the stall didn't bother Prescott as the Wolverettes continued to pound the pumpkinheads, pushing the score to 24-8 with 3:05 left in the half.

For the most part, Nashville's scoring in the period came from the free throw line, though there was some question whether the Scrapperettes would break the double digit barrier by the half.

On the other hand, Traci Graham picked up her game, shooting with a smooth stroke and finding nothing but the bottom of the net.

Halftime arrived with Prescott leading 29-14.

The Scrapperettes managed to score first in all four quarters, but did little after breaking the ice.

Period three saw the real Wolverettes emerge from the locker room. They had fire in their eye and were hungry for the win.

Prescott scored almost as many points in the third quarter alone as the team did in the first half.

Andrea Cossey found her range from beyond the arc to loosen Nashville's inside game. However, the Scrapperettes, for some bizarre reason, left Wolverette players alone outside the three-point line.

As other teams have found out, all the hard way, leaving a Wolverette alone from anywhere on the court is dangerous and costly. It was again as Prescott bombarded a helpless Nashville team into the hardwood.

With 1:50 left in the quarter Prescott led 46-21. The Wolverette defense stiffened even more and allowed no more points in the period. The offense, though, added 11, going inside and outside to do it.

Stacy Stockton drove the baseline, with 1:06 showing, and had her legs cut from under her. The shot fell as did Stockton hard. She was able to get up and complete the three-point play, though.

As the period wound down, Amanda Hodges also went inside, put up a soft shot and scored as the buzzer sounded to give Prescott a 57-21 lead.

For the most part, Prescott Coach Bill Cossey had done little substituting during the game.

Nashville, though, was thoroughly rattled at the start of the final eight minutes, which allowed the Wolverettes to get down right nasty on the boards, ripping down rebound after rebound.

At the 6:14 point, with the score 61-23, Cossey began clearing the bench.

There was little shooting for the remainder of the game, as the Wolverettes dribbled and passed around Nashville.

This, though, didn't stop those who were now on the bench from cheering them on, extolling them to score and having a good time in general.

The game, though, was stopped, at 5:18, when a couple of boys in the stands showed their intelligence, or the lack thereof, by getting into a scuffle. The officials stopped the game, summoned the police officers on hand and had the offenders removed.

Play resumed, with the Wolverettes posting their 14th win of the year.

Stockton was the game's leading scorer with 24 points, while Graham contributed a solid 16.

Marta Stanley led Nashville with nine.
