Classy Moments

Published Wednesday, January 27, 1999 in the Gurdon Times

If you were smelling freshly popped popcorn and wondered where it was coming from, it just may have been at Cabe Middle School. The sixth grade challenged the fifth grade to see which grade could read the most books in a certain time. Well, guess who was popping corn? You are right, the sixth grade teachers. Those fifth graders were served popcorn and Coke, as they won the challenge. There was a big question surrounding a certain fifth grade teacher by the name of Davies, but I understand it was just a misunderstanding. (Or will there be 'the rest of the story' later?) Regardless, the fifth graders are the reading champs!

The eight graders are busying learning the importance of the U.S. Constitution. They are required to take notes, of which they are doing so much better with that assignment. Before long, you should be able to ask them anything about the Constitution and they will be able to correctly answer the question. (At least Mrs. Clingan has confidence in them.)

We have several students who have recently transferred to CMS and we extend a big welcome. They seem to be adjusting well.

Lacey Jester, Bonnie Ferguson, Tracy Coplen, Taylor Pace and Jill Plyler met with Mrs. Clingan to work on the first Cabe Middle School annual. The excitement is wonderful. So much to be done, but the CMS Student Council is busy gathering pictures and interesting information concerning our students. Although this will be the first, we hope this is just the beginning for CMS to have a yearbook. So many decisions to be made: what to name the annual, color for the cover, how many pages, plus numerous others. When the finished product is ready, it is hoped to be one that will hold memories for the students of CMS.

We were hoping this would never happen to us, but it did. I would like to put false rumors to rest. Yes, we did have a student who had a gun. No, he did not point the gun at anyone. Of course, we would have preferred that this never happened, but since it did the situation was handled as quickly as possible with the safety of all of the students, faculty and staff as priority.

Our sympathy is extended to Rebecca Stephens in the loss of her grandmother. Rebecca, our thoughts are with you.

Progress is certainly being made in the completion of the new physical education building, as well as the classrooms for Mrs. Hitt and Mrs. Downey. The field house and concession stand for the new football field is also under construction. Work! Work! Work!

We are constantly striving to make those Classy Moments at CMS.
