Meeting Held Jan. 19Published Wednesday, January 27, 1999 in the Gurdon TimesThe Women of the Church of God met Tuesday, January 19, at the fellowship hall. There were nine women in attendance. They were Doris Vance, Eulah Wilson, Shirley Smithpeters, Vivian Spruill, Janet Toland, Karen Self, Velvet Gonzales, Jeannie Burchfield and Rhonda Spruill. There were also three guests from the Carriage Street Church of God. They were Mary Henry, Billie Goza and Peggy Waston. Janet Toland was the hostess. She presented a lesson entitled, 'The Hardest Sayings of Jesus.' The scripture references were Matthew 5:38-48 and Luke 6: 27-42. The lesson topic was violence. The group discussed Jesus' teachings about violence and contemplated on personal responses to violence. One member had read about a young Christian girl in Pakistan named Saleen who is going on trial for murder. The friend she had witnessed to was of another faith. When this girl shared her news about becoming a Christian, her family publicly executed her. Now Saleen is on trial, because she shared the news of Christ which caused the girl's conversion. If found guilty, she will be executed. We ask that all Christians be in prayer about this. We should all consider Jesus' teachings when we respond to violence. Even Gandhi confirmed these teachings when he said 'An eye for an eye and soon the whole world will be blind.' Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
