Classy Moments

Published Wednesday, February 3, 1999 in the Gurdon Times

We were certainly entertained with a visit from the Little Rock Zoo as Birds of Prey was presented Tuesday. Various kinds of birds were described and displayed during the program.

It is very surprising how 'scared' one can become when they see a bird up close. The owls were so interesting as it seemed as though they could turn their heads completely around, although we know they cannot.

All eyes were glued on the eagle when he made his appearance. Everyone had been warned to be very quiet during the presentation, as to not scare the birds.

However, there were two adults (by the names of Dickens and McBride) who found it very difficult to be quiet. (What kind of role model did those two give?)

The man carrying the eagle, having it perched upon his arm, told Mrs. Clingan that she would be able to get a good close up picture of the eagle as he would stop in front of her. Having the camera ready, you would think that all was well, but was she surprised.

All of a sudden the eagle decided to spread its wings and when that happened, those two adults, Dickens and McBride, screamed and then as difficult as it is to believe, Mrs. McBride pushed Mrs. Clingan off the bleacher onto the floor. That's right! There she was on the floor, camera in hand ready to take a picture, but the eagle had been so upset by all that had happened right in front of him, he had to be taken far away from those two! Need I say more?

Just goes to show that you really never know what friends will do! Poor Mrs. Clingan was so mistreated.

We are so proud of Mrs. Davies and Mrs. Smithson as they received a $1,500 grant from the C. Louis and Mary C. Cabe Foundation for an accelerated reading program. But they were not through, as they also received a $3,000 grant from the Ross Foundation through Dawson Education Cooperative for the same program.

This program encourages the students to read more books. They are tested after each book to check on comprehension.

The students are really getting into the reading and enjoying it, as comments like "That was really a good book" and "I can't wait until I read that" are being heard.

We congratulate these teachers for taking the time to write a grant request. A great amount of time is required to write a grant and it is so rewarding to be notified that your request has been granted.

An uninvited visitor invaded our school. The visitor is better known as a 'bad old virus' and we are ready for it to leave the area. Seriously, it has been really rough for several and we are ready to have all well again.

The CMS Student Council has a school supply drive going on to help the students at Beebe. Any school supplies or money, if that is your preference, will be taken to Beebe to try to help those who lost so much in the recent tornado. If you would like to help with this, please call the school at 353-4311.

Mrs. Clingan's seventh graders have been presenting commercials. This is a little different last year, as food cannot be eaten in the room so various items are being used as an advertisement in a 30-second commercial.

That was individual commercials, but then came the 60-second commercial with two students working together. Some were very nervous, but soon overcame that and really enjoyed trying to convince the class that they needed to go out and buy the product they had chosen to use as their ad.

Our physical education building is coming right along. From the outside, it really looks great. We are all so anxious to have it completed. We are indeed very grateful to have this addition.

We are all busy, but never too busy to pause and realize how fortunate we are to have such a beautiful, comfortable facility that we call 'home away from home' better known as Cabe Middle School and that's where we make those Classy Moments.
