Published Wednesday, February 3, 1999 in the Gurdon Times

The Gurdon senior basketball teams split a pair of games at Nevada Friday night.

The Lady Go-Devils came away with a 52-48 victory over the top team in the 7AA Central District, and the senior boys were surprised by the Blue Jays, 62-53.

The Gurdon Go-Devils are in second place in the conference, behind Stephens. Nevada did not gain any ground with the victory and remains in third place.

Rashun Hopson, Terry Cornish and Adrian Meeks each scored 11 points for the Go- Devils against Nevada.

Others scoring for Gurdon were Demond Beasley with 4 points, Derek Anderson with3 and Cameron House and Keevin Beasley with 2 each for the Go-Devils.

Scoring in double figures for Nevada were Julius Gulley with 27 points and Jason Yarbrough with 16 points.

The Lady Go-Devils pressured Nevada in the front court relentlessly and it paid off. Another extra was so many of the Lady Devils were able to get the ball through the hoop. In all, 10 players scored for Gurdon.

Leading the Lady Devils was Lavonda Young with 21 points, who was disappointed in the first half at the free throw line.

Others scoring for Gurdon were Brandi Escalante with 9 points; Emaeal Hendrix with 6; Helen Dickens with 3 points; Tiffany Ware, Angela Walker, Ebonee Crow and Yvonne Penny each scored 2 points; and Crystal Simpson finished with 1 point.

Ramona Evans of Nevada was the game's leading scorer with 26 points, not enough to prevent the Lady Go-Devils from spoiling their homecoming.

In the junior boys game, Nevada was the winner by 45-37.

Kenard Pegram scored 8 points for Gurdon; Dorsey Kelly scored 7; Brandon Kirby 6; Eddie Fort, Norris Glenn and Obrian Moss each scored 4 points, Reggie Cooks had 3 and Toney Dixon finished with 1 point.

Four players for the Nevada junior boys were in double figures. Matthew Young scored 12 and Johnathan House, Recarto King and Patrick Brown scored 10 points apiece.

The Nevada junior boys won the 7AA Central Conference. They will hose the Junior District Conference next week.
