Classy Moments

Published Wednesday, February 10, 1999 in the Gurdon Times

Seems as though there's always talk about the weather. Well we will just add to that conversation. Just when we decide we better dress for colder weather, then the temperature goes up and we find ourselves over dressed and very uncomfortable. We enjoy the warmer weather, don't get us wrong, but it is difficult to know what to wear.

Several students try to satisfy the various temperatures and weather conditions, as they wear a jacket and shorts, or a short sleeve shirt and trousers or jeans. Oh, well, to each his own, as it has been quoted!!

Students have been busy voting for the king and queen candidates that will be crowned Thursday, February 11, at 9 a.m. in the cafeteria. You are invited to attend this assembly. The candidates for the fifth grade are Callie King and Aaron May; sixth grade: Taylor Pace and Jamelle Lacey; seventh grade: Lindette Kadiri and David Garland; and the eighth grade: Tracy Coplen and Matt May. This is a close race and we are anxious to know who will be the king and queen for the school year 1999-2000. It costs a penny per vote. This is also a fund-raiser for the CMS Student Council and one that is enjoyed by all students.

Since the weather has not been so bad to cause our school to be closed, we will have two days out of school that were put in the schedule for bad weather and since they have not had to be used we will enjoy a four-day weekend. We will be out of school Friday, February 12, and Monday, February 15, so when you see our kids raking leaves, washing the family car, helping mom with the grocery shopping and several other helpful chores, don't think they are skipping school as they are probably really miserable just not being able to attend class.

The teachers enjoyed a big potluck Friday to observe a birthday. The daily bulletin had a statement that smart people were born in February, such as George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Jeff Alexander. Is there a joker among us, or was it a typo? The potluck was great and we enjoyed honoring the greatness of Washington and Lincoln, but that other guy, the one who ate most of the day, we use an excuse for a delicious potluck.

I would like to express the most sincere appreciation to Mary Virginia for the beautiful card expressing her appreciation of having the Classy Moments for her to read each week so she is able to keep up with the school activities. Those kind of comments mean more than you can know. Thank you so very much.

Work is continuing on the first yearbook for Cabe Middle School. The staff, members of the Student Council, work whenever time allows to have the first yearbook the best it can be. The support received from the merchants is greatly appreciated. Orders will be taken soon. We will keep you informed in case you might like to order one. If you have any old pictures of our students or faculty when they were younger and you would like to share those in our yearbook, please call Mrs. Clingan at the school. She will be glad to have your help in providing those memories to treasure.

Thursday, February 11, the progress reports will be sent home by the students and are to be returned signed by the parents when we return to school Tuesday, February 16, when we make those Classy Moments at CMS.
