The sirens, he said, are made to be outdoor warning signals, and may not be able to be heard by those inside their homes.

When the sirens go off, though, it is a good idea to turn on a radio or television to see what's going on weatherwise.

Smith said Clark County has a good system of weather watchers and spotters.

The National Weather Service held a weather spotter class in Gurdon a year or so ago, with more than 50 people taking the class.

Smith will try and get the NWS back to teach another class.

Once the sirens are in place, he said, each of the city's police cars will have an encoder which can set off the sirens if an officer spots a potential tornado or other severe weather.
