BLEVINS 34

Published Wednesday, February 17, 1999 in the Nevada County Picayune

LEWISVILLE 29 Early on in the junior girls final, it looked like the game could be a blowout for either Blevins or Lewisville.

Both scored on their opening possessions and the Lady Hornets took a 5-2 lead with 3:49 left in the period.

But, the Lady Red Devils fought back, outscoring Blevins 10-2 for the rest of the quarter, as the Lady Hornets were mistake prone.

Period one ended with Lewisville leading 12-7.

This game was slowed to a crawl as both teams were called for foul after foul, stopping the clock for either inbound plays or free throws.

The Lady Hornets dominated the second quarter, forcing Lewisville into miscues, turning them into points.

Blevins' defense allowed two points, but much of this could be attributed to poor shooting by the Lady Devils. The halftime score was 18-14 favoring the Lady Hornets.

It was Lewisville's turn to win a quarter as the second half got underway.

Blevins was unable to do much offensively, scoring only two, while the Lady Devils took the lead at 21-20.

As had been the game's pattern, it was Blevins' turn to win the quarter they did, and big.

Blevins opened the last six minutes by stealing the ball and scoring to take the lead at 22- 21.

The two squads left everything they had on the floor, knocking one another around in the paint as they fought for rebounds.

Blevins led 28-25 with 1:27 left in the game, and saw the Lady Devils narrow the gap to 30-29 with 0:38 left.

Lewisville was forced to foul quickly and often to put Blevins at the line and have a shot at getting the pumpkin.

However, the Lady Hornets capitalized by sinking a couple of free throws late. This took the wind out of Lewisville's girls, who simply quit playing and gave the title to Blevins.
