PRESCOTT 68

Published Wednesday, February 17, 1999 in the Nevada County Picayune

DE QUEEN 69 Wolverette fans had some serious questions with the final results at De Queen.

When the smoke cleared, the home team managed a 69-68 win over Prescott's girls, but some fans don't believe the victory was legitimate and questioned the officiating.

At one point in the game, Cossey was knocked down by a member of the Lady Leopards and shoved when she attempted to get up. When Cossey asked if the official saw what had transpired, she was called for a technical foul.

This gave De Queen two free throws and the ball.

Late in the contest, Graham was fouled while going in for a lay up. The ball found nothing but net, but none of the three the officials saw the bucket. She was, though, awarded two free throws.

As Stockton later put it, during her time with the Wolverettes, Prescott has never won when visiting De Queen.

Prescott won the first quarter with a 21-14 score. However, Stockton was called for her third foul early in the second quarter and rode the pines most of the period.

This helped the Lady Leopards take a 39-33 halftime lead to the locker room.

Neither offense did much in the third quarter, but the home team managed to push their lead to double digits at 50-40.

The Wolverettes did everything humanly possible to pull the game out in the final eight minutes, but were unable to get over the hump.

As the game wound down, De Queen led by four. Stockton launched a three at the buzzer for the final tally.

De Queen spent more time at the charity stripe than did Prescott. The Lady Leopards were 22 of 32 from the line, while the Wolverettes converted 12 of 18.

Stockton led Prescott's offensive assault with 22 points. Graham followed with 15, while Hodges sank 14. Cossey finished the game with 11.

Revels led all scorers with 24 for De Queen. Tollett scored 19.

Still, Prescott's Wolverettes are the top seed going into the 7AAA District Tournament in Fouke this week.

The Wolverettes won't play until the semifinals Friday, at which time they take the court at 6:40 p.m. against a foe to be named later.

By being the top seed in the district tourney, the Wolverettes have an automatic bid to the regional tournament in Hamburg next week.

The Curley Wolves, who lost 79-40 to Mena Friday night, will be playing at 6:40 p.m. Wednesday.
