Bluff City

It seems that about every week we hear of another person connected to this community who has passed away. Garland Moore passed away September 14 in Gulfport, Miss. He grew up in Bluff City and later lived in Camden. Graveside services were held at Bluff City Cemetery on September 17. Our sympathy is extended to his sister, Eloene McBride of Bluff City and all the Moore family.

It was good to see in last week's paper that Helen Kelly was able to go home after a stay at Hillcrest.

I have been asked to remind everyone of the monthly singing at the Bluff City Baptist Church. This has been a tradition in Bluff City for many years. It takes place on the first Tuesday night of each month from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Make plans to attend.

Wouldn't it have been nice if Hurricane Floyd had dropped just a little of that water on Nevada County? I said just a little.' When I see all that flooding, it makes me glad I live on a hill.

Here are some things I remember from days gone by (you may have to explain them to the young folks): looking for doodlebugs, walking on tom walkers, girls playing hopscotch, shooting marbles, girls cutting out paper dolls from the Sears catalog, making homemade ice cream in a syrup bucket in a tub of ice, catching fire flies in a jar, 78 rpm records, trips to the outhouse, an icebox and the ice peddler, drinking well water from a dipper, and making lye soap. Can you think of others?

A thought: Adolescence is a period of rapid changes. Between the ages of 12 and 17 for example, a parent ages as much as 20 years.
